Janyška "Praga", 58cm, NOS condition but with Mothing, Janyška Hat Holder, probably late 1930s early 1940s. More of a Chamois like finish and with thin Sweatband. This one is from my latest Czech find.

Janyška, 58cm, Crown Open 6 inches, Brim 2 inches, no Liner, NOS condition, probably late 1930s early to mid 1940s. The felt is pliable and takes a dry crease. This is the only one without brim binding and has a different form than the "Praga" models. It's from my latest Czech find.

Brüder Böhm "Luxor", 59cm, Wool, NOS condition, with Böhm Hat Holder and Paper Size Tag, probably late 1930s. Old Brüder Böhm Soft Felts are very rare finds. This is from my latest Czech find.

I think this might be a cloth based sweatband. The separation doesn't appear to be from stretching.

I had expressed my appreciation for the BB Luxor and today I see this marvellous Janyška and started in my mind a sort of envy for these homburgs.
They are fantastic and, above all, so simple.
Not brim binding and a shape that is very close to the traditional Alps hats of one hundred years ago.
It is a pleasure to see these example so well conserved and ready to be wear!

Daniele, Yes this is the way I feel too. The BB and Janyška hats are not high end (more everyday hats) but they look and wear great. Also reflect a specific time and place.

I think this must be the Italian version of MayserWegener's wonderful Eastern European Homburgs. A not high end hat, but everyday wear that looks great. I'd love to hear if anyone here as information about the Bormida hatmakers from Milan.

It looks great (although it's worthy of better photos :) )! Can you take photos of the inside (liner, sweatband)? Also of the paper label behind the sweatband assuming it has one. Thanks!

Bormida is the name of a river between Piedmont and Liguria, nortwest of Italy.
It could be a name of a hats producers that came from that part of Italy.
Piedmont is the region of the main Italian hatters
There was a very active hats production in Monza during the last 200 years.
They were specialized in woll hats. Here http://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/a-short-history-of-italian-hatters.85247/#post-2084966 a short history of Italian hatters with the last chapter dedicated to Monza.

Thanks, Steve. You are right. I'll try to take better photos in a better light tomorrow.
For sure some better pictures will help to identify this Italian homburg.
Here an example of Monza wool homburg http://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/post-new-hats-here.28145/page-1489#post-2085047
You can find some others made by Borsalino in the thread "What you are wearing today" and some Italian and French homburgs in the "Homburg Nation".
Type my name and you will have the homburgs production in the SouthWest Europe...some of them

Thanks Daniele, that's very interesting. It says Milan inside the hat, so the pieces of the puzzle more or less match. I'll try and post some better photos of the inside of the hat this evening. I'll definitely be checking out the thread links you posted.

Thanks again, Daniele - Steve

Hi all. Here are , hopefully, some better photos of my Bormida Homburg.

Bormida I.jpg

Bormida II.jpg

The one below shows the middle of the inside of the hat. Above the map of Italy, it says "Produzione di gran classe". Below the Milano - Italia mark is the name of the hat emporium, which imported it to and sold it in Denmark. This hatters no longer exists. I haven't, as yet, been able to find out when it went out of business.

I'd really love to find out more about Bormida. When it began, when it ended production etc. Daniele Tanto has been a great help with some info about the area around the Bormida river etc. Thanks Daniele.

I'd appreciate any more help these new photos can give.

Take care fellow hat lovers - Steve

It is a question of geography! Forget Milan that has little to do with the Bormida
The Bormida is a river just a few kilometers east of Alexandria, home of Borsalino, it flows into the Tanaro, the river that runs through the city famous throughout the world for its hats.
Having said that I have in my collection a few hats of good quality with the "Tanaro" brand that look very much like the average quality Borsalino.
Your hat is also from that area because the label of the size is the same as that used on the Vanzinas hats.
Vanzinas was acquired by Borsalino in the 50s of the last century and used as brand for commercial purpose.
Therefore for quality, design and finish your hat has been made in the Alessandria area.
Steve must take into account that in the golden years of Italian hatters, for commercial reasons and export problems, some important hat producers had lines with brand different from the one source.
Your homburg is beautiful and in Italian is called Lobbia for......"political reasons"
As you can see is a little different in form from homburg that Steve (Mayserwegener) has recently published.
I do not think I can give you further news on Bormida factory hats because I think it existed only as a trade mark.
I'm sorry.....maybe Steve (Mayserwegener) will find on his sources somenthing more precise

Thanks once again for your informative info Daniele. We are hat lovers and want to find out as much as we can about our hats. The stuff we can't find out exasperates us, but also makes our hats more enigmatic. We can live with both :)

I know about the Vanzina company being taken over by Borsalino after WWII. When did it stop? Do Borsalino still "shape" some Vanzina hats? I ask because I have a Vanzina "shaped by Borsalino", but this probably belongs in another forum.

I agree with Daniele. The sweatband cord is very similar to late 1950s and later Echter Borsalinos (German Market Borsalinos). I have only seen (until your Bormida :) ) such sweatband cords on late 1950s and later Echter Borsalinos. Also the green and white paper Size tag is Borsalino like.

By the way great hat and thank you for taking the additional photos!

It was a pleasure to take the new photos, Steve. Thank you for your very interesting and informative comments. I'm really pleased with my Bormida. I found it at a fleamarket covered in thick, yellow dust. It looked like someone had been wearing it while tearing down a ceiling or wall. I cleaned it up and hey presto - good as new. Not bad for a dollar, 50 (or 1.34 euros) :)
