I've been studying pictures of slouch & drab hats worn by the Confederacy during the Civil War. I'm looking for a suitable hat with enough crown & taper to reproduce a slouch similar to this one if anyone has ideas for a candidate. It does not have to be wool.
In doing research I found the story of Sergeant Thomas Jacob Duckett & the drab hat he wore thru the war intriguing.
Sergeant Thomas Jacob Duckett, 3rd South Carolina Infantry wore this typical Confederate drab hat at the Battle of Chickamauga. The image shows him at a veteran's re-union after the war.
At Chickamauga a bullet tore through his hat but left him uninjured. Duckett wrote the caption for it on the outside. The hat is now at the Museum of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia.
Look at the size of that hole. Incredible!

I've always favored Heston's "Ralph Steel" slouch hat from "Secret Of The Incas". I've been considering doing a conversion to that one. I have a hat I can use for it.

I really like the size & everything about this officers hat. The second picture is of a new reproduction officers hat obviously influenced by the real deal. The black & gold cords were for officers, the solid gold cords were used for Generals. My THC 30X El Mejor would make a good candidate to copy the original.

I watched that movie several times. Looks somewhat similar to Heston's SOTI hat, somewhat.

By the second yr of the war the Confederacy was buying Officers & slouch hats on contracts of 5,000 & 6,000 hats at a time from various suppliers. Most orders were imported. That's why there is great variation among the hats. There was no standard issue hat. This Officers hat seems to have a pencil curl around the brim.
Nice looking hat & Officers frock coat. Single pair of stars would indicate he was a Major but I don't recognize the picture. The Southern Cross of Honor would indicate this was post war 1900. So the hat may not have been worn thru the war. Can't read the reunion ribbon.

I can't speak to the quality because it is not mine. Don't know if it is wool or a fur blend. I think it was Dirty Billy's although I have been studying pictures & saving them for a while so I could be wrong.

No Name Hat Manufacturing Co. hat worn at the 1904 reunion of the United Confederate Veterans Association held in Nashville, TN. Hat was found in Nashville.

This is a Union Officer's beaver fur hat made by Knox. It has a cloth eagle insignia on the crown front & a Civil War Michigan button on a cockade with a hat feather.
This is an authentic Civil War beaver fur hat also possibly made by Knox, but for the missing tip liner. The insignia & the number 2 on the crown front are metal on cloth, backed by metal. Handwritten inside is "1830" but it is unknown if that could be a date?
