We first hooked up in the Hattery in Katoomba a bit over three years ago and have been constant companions ever since. He used to be a Banjo Paterson but he's certainly something else altogether these days. I call him "O'Feral" because he used to stink so much whenever he got wet. I recently washed him with some baby shampoo and that helped quite a lot, but the name's stuck!

Thank you Johnny. A hat can't help but get lived in when it's gets as many miles in as quick a time as this hat's gotten. And what a trooper! That's why I'll keep purchasing Akubras in the future, too - once I find something that suits my needs I don't need to look anywhere else.

I just saw that your Snowy River is 15 years old! Wow, Johnny, you DO keep good care of your hats! I'm a bit confused - do you have two different hats, or did you modify it on the day these shots were taken? Great necklace by the way!

Thanks. I brush the dust off regularly and store it sitting on it's crown. Use rain storms to keep the brim in the shape I like.
Yes they are two different hats. The first is the SR and the second is a Coolabah. I have a fairly large collection of Akubra hats.
The necklace is Amber. Supposed to help keep your calm. My wife tells me I am an easily excitable person. I don't think it works but I do like it.

Finally got to open my Banjo Patterson today.
It fits in nicely with my other Akubra hats.

Hi all, I am a newbe here...just wondering if any of you Akubra fans have an Akubra Safari hat and if so how does it compare to the Coober Pedy? Is the only difference the hat band? I have a Coolabah that is pretty well worn that I picked up in Cairns in 2001 to wear on a barramundi fishing excursion...love that hat but it has been through so many hunts and fishing trips that its time to give it a rest. The lining came out after a rain soaking last year and it's been reshaped so many times it doesn't pass for a Coolabah anymore. The coober is black and I use it as my "dress hat" so I am looking at the Safari to take over the rough duty that the Coolabah has handled so well over the past 16 years.

Hello, I live in Seoul, Korea where weather is now rainy season. I wear two akubra federation IV several times in the rain and mistakenly put the hat nested. Then, somehow, the sweatband got sort of very sticky. By sticky, I do not mean "comfortable sticky" against strong wind. It is like "glued."

For grey federation iv, the whole band got sticky. If I smear it, sticky black residue comes off. I tried tooth brush with soap to clean off, but no success. For the other federation IV, only forehead and rear-head part is beginning partially sticky. I would like to salvage the latter one. But, don't know how.

Did I completely ruin the hats?

This is the second post I've seen in about a month concerning these sticky Akubra sweatbands giving off a black residue.
What is going on ?

But I really learned most of what my hat knowledge is from other forum members.

Anyway I do have both hats.

I think that the Safari is more in the range of a Banjo Paterson, smaller, dressier hat.

I got it because I thought I will be a real "Safari" looking hat, but it doesn't, it is more of a fancy looking hat, I do wear it in the city, not a real dress hat but you can wear it with a suit or jeans and will look good both ways.

I know, for sure, that Akubra discontinued the Safari some 6 months ago, so, if you want it, got to move fast on the last ones on the shelves.

The Coober Pedy, one of my favorite hats, is more a city-country hybrid, it looks great everywhere, it even looks great in black !!

So, in short, if you want a hat for the outdoors, I will recommend you get another Coober Pedy, Santone fawn is a great shade, or a hat such as a Tablelands, you can also get a Slouch or Military Akubra, that hat is always a head Turner and you can dress it with a couple of badges, I love mine.

I have a Cattleman, similar to the Tablelands, but somehow I never really liked it as a Cattleman so I changed it and reshaped the hat into a real Safari crease.

Anyway you can't go wrong with the Akubras, at least my experience has always been good I suggest you check Sam Menche's everythingaustralian.com.au online store, best prices and a great service.

The main difference between the Coober Peby and the safari is the brim size. Safari has a 79mm brim so it's the same as your Coolabah. The Coober Pedy has 84mm brim. Any more information past that I will have to ask my sister. She has both hats.

I had a ca. 1974 Dobbs with a sweatband made of manmade material that deteriorated and would leave black greasy marks all over my forehead. I had a fairly local hatter, Mike Miller of NW Hat Co, replace the sweat for me with a nice leather example. Good as new.

@moontheloon , I remember those sticky Akubra sweats too... weird stuff.

Replace the sweatbands.
