    The Resistol Roundup

Maybe its just a play on words Mellow Roll - refering to the flange. Like Resist All - refering to the felt.

    Hat Renovation by Art Fawcett

I deleted the posts - not because I do not stand 100% behind them - I deleted them - because my question got me nowhere - except for you and your wild assumptions based on poor interpretation. If anyone would like a run down of my hat experience - I would be glad to share. But I wont keep...

I am not a hatter. I restore hats. That is my opinion, not a dismissal.

    Hat Renovation by Art Fawcett

I am not a hatter. I choose to restore hats with a method that I have been practicing for years. I have done every quality and every brand of fur felt under the sun. In my experience, I have found that using a more tapered method to restoring hats with simply steam and brush tension - will...

    Hat Renovation by Art Fawcett

That is amazing - that is what I was asking - thank you - seems like overkill though. I didn't mean to offend. I was taken aback by a one word response to a very forum appropriate question - by a moderator. It seems I have stepped on toes since the get go when a dude appreciated my...

    Hat Renovation by Art Fawcett

A before & after Resistol - no caustic solvents - just steam - my customer took me seriously - and paid me extra - and gifted me a 1940s Wool Gabardine shirt.

What is - "stripping a hat?" I noticed on your website that it said: cleaning, stripping, and shaping.

    Help with this Stetson's age

Nada. I am pretty sure that this sweat has been replaced. It is almost like an old school "comfort sweat band" - a cloth backed leather - Old but tensile. That ticket is the only remnant. And I love that it IS a ticket (shape).

    Help with this Stetson's age

The only information I can make out on this ticket is - that it was in fact made in the Philadelphia Factory. The fella who owns it - attributes it to his grandfather on the King ranch at the turn of the twentieth century. Any other insight would be wonderful!

    Anyway to repair this damage?

It is matted - steam and a felt sponge. Work the hat over steam - open the crown - steam - work the sponge over the mat against a hard surface (blocks work well) - do this over and over until the steam has broken the mat, and the sponge helps flick it away. As far as how much steam - well it...

    1970's fedora?

The secret thrill is in the tweed rag silks. Each one I have ever seen has had a silk unique unto another. Paisleys, flowers, pinwheels - dynamic colors. So in addition to the outrageous exterior, the collector has - like an easter egg. don't get me wrong though, go felt or go home. ;)

    Fedoras afield

so how much to self promote? and what is considered self promotion? (surely not some obscure b&w photo of a Fedora in a Fedora thread - with the caption - "work in progress") plus I am not selling anything - or manufacturing anything - I am making better what the people here already have -...

    Show off your Porkpies

Yes - good intermittent steam. I open all of the crowns on my restore work. The bulk of time is restructuring the crown, and cleaning it. On average I will run crown work through the entirety of my restore - with the finishing touches being the actual shape. Once the crown is ready to hold a...

    Hat Stiffeners

John, everything by hand. I have one old antique block around a 6.78 that I use to (what I call) push and pull crowns, to help rebuild strength. But no molds, flanges, or specialty blocks. I do Everything free hand. I have been working on hats regular for near 15 years now. I operate a...
