Art Deco 'superyacht' Lady Christine IV

These super yachts are usually indescribably vulgar, but this one is rather nice: Salon: Dining Room: Master bedroom: From here, more pictures and links etc. Just the right side of the opulent/vulgar line, very Art Deco in that as well.

Phryne Fisher/1920s Melbourne come to Television

Happy news, I don't think it has been posted yet: From here. More about the Phryne Fisher series here. I do hope the ABC does a good job of this, it is about time they did a decent costume drama if they are serious about rivalling the BBC.

    An abundance of patterns

Hello Ladies, my grandmother recently dug up the following patterns from her cupboards and wardrobes and is hoping to sell them to fund some thing or other (this is not a sales topic). My question is, are they desirable, or indeed, saleable? Some are rather tatty, most of them are from the 60s...

Golden Era Chocolate - Ernest Hillier.

I thought these might be of interest, some films from the Ernest Hillier chocolate factory in Sydney, dating to 1926. Hillier's was the first company to produce chocolate in Australia, back in 1914. Prior to that chocolate was all imported and spoilt by the journey...

Suits for the Short of Stature.

Are there things to avoid when purchasing a suit or other apparel when one is shorter than the average? I don't mean something like jacket length, rather anything from the pattern to the width or height of the lapel? At 167cm/5'6 the last thing I need is to look shorter.

    Naval Cut

I have seen several references to suits of a 'naval cut' in various old novels and such, can anyone explain what naval cut is? I have a vague idea it may be something to do with button stance on the jacket, mimicking that of the naval blazer. But that is just my ill-educated speculation.

The Prince of Wales' Ascot Suit

I think this may be the nicest suit I have ever seen on a public figure. One assumes a top hat with a suit is only appropriate at Royal Ascot?

The Rainbow Orchid: adventure in the Golden Era

I apologise if this has been posted before, but I thought people here might enjoy this: http://www.garenewing.co.uk/rainboworchid/index.php It is an adventure comic set in the late 1920s created by a chap named Garen Ewing in the ligne claire (think Tintin) style. Very good story and lovely...

    Converting an adjustable bow tie

What ho. Does anyone know if it is possible, or worth while to convert an adjustable bow tie to a regular bow tie by sewing the ends together at the required length? I ask because I was recently given a rather nice bow tie, but it is adjustable. Rather than upset or offend the giver (who...

Victoria and Albert Museum Little Black Dress

Sorry to intrude, ladies, but my mother craves your opinion on the following: http://www.vandashop.com/product.php?xProd=1160&s=1 She wishes to purchase one for my sister, but wants a more expert opinion on its vintageyness. The V&A also have a pattern for a Golden Era dress, if anyone is...

    Royal Stetson Playboy

I picked this up at a local thrift store today, a 7 1/8 Stetson Playboy, in a rather nice shade of green described as Miami Green on the slip in the hat. I can not get a decent picture of most of the inside detail so I will transcribe it below Sweatband has on it Playboy, the...

    Stetson by Akubra

Does anyone know for how long Akubra produced hats for Stetson under license? I have heard variously that they stopped in the 60s, 70s and 80s, hardly a precise date range.

Doing my bit to stimulate the (Akubra) Economy

Having pined after one for months and months, I just this moment broke down and ordered a Federation IV Deluxe in Dark Brown from Hats Direct. I refuse to think of this as profligacy, I am, in fact, stimulating the economy! What is good for Akubra is good for the country. Now I just hope the...

Opinion on this Louis Feraud dinner jacket & trousers

I picked up this double breasted black tie ensemble from Louis Feraud at a thrift store for all of $3, and would appreciate any comments on its acceptability. It is 100% wool with satin facings/trim. Sorry about the picture quality, the camera is misbehaving. To my inexperienced eye it seems...

    Vintage Books

I did a search, and could not find any thread devoted to the display of peoples favourite books. So I thought I would start one. There must be other people who collect vintage books? Post pictures and description of your favourites. Here are two of mine: "The Army / Shown to Children" c1914/15...

    Hat refurbishment in Australia

Does anyone know if there are any decent hatters in Australia who are willing to refurbish old hat bodies? I picked up a beaten up old hat in an op shop yesterday, possibly an Akubra plainsman, though it has no brand name on the sweatband and the liner is missing, along with the hatband. It is a...

    Australian Summer Wear

With temperatures rising here in the Antipodes, I am looking for something 'Golden Era-y' I can wear over a shirt and tie (generally with khaki trousers) which will not cause me to self immolate, any suggestions? I have unfortunately shrunk out of a linen suit I acquired for this very purpose...
