I was recently gifted a vintage Stetson hat and am wondering what year it may be. The price tag says $17.00. The serial # is B749681. It was purchased in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The information you have provided is unfortunately not very definitive. Maybe someone here recognizes the serial number format and can put it within certain dates, but without a photo inside and out I don’t think any of us are going to be able to give you anything specific.

I don’t know any vintage Stetsons with an original $17 price point, which makes me think either this was made in the last 40-50 years (and will probably not be extraordinary) or $17 is a resale price (in which case, that price doesn’t tell us anything).

Do you have photos? That is the best way to get more information.

As LC says, not enough info. If you read through the Lounge, there are several threads discussing age estimates of Stetsons.

If you can provide photos of all sweatband markings, the interior lining, and any tags we can take a stab at it. Also, look behind the sweatband for any labels; they're usually at the rear of the hat (affixed to the felt).

Hopefully these photos may help.
They certainly do - that’s an excellent hat probably from the 1950s!

Congratulations, you have been gifted a piece of history in what looks to be very good condition. That’s really fantastic.

Question: what makes you say this was priced at $17.00? Does it have that price tag under the leather sweat?

Yeah, most likely mid-50s or so. There might be some info on price points in the Nutria thread.

Fits pretty good. More room at the sides and a little tight from front to back. Is there a way to adjust the fit?

Sounds like you're a long oval. You can try the hat stretcher, but be very careful and do it a little at a time, if you do. You heve a very nice old hat there, and I'd hate to see you pop stitches or damage the sweatband.

Not sure where you are, but if you have a hatter nearby, you might give them a call.
