.... Is the "Royal Deluxe" of lesser quality than a 3X of the same vintage? ....
Like D'man says, & we know he is D'man, :D , 3X is above Royal Deluxe for same model year hat. I always consider 3X on par with the Sovereign. I think Jimmy the Lid posted an actual advertisement from Stetson that had the list D'man just posted. They probably used the 3X cause that was what the western hats used & the OR is a cross over to city hat wearers. My 3X of about the same vintage is much nicer than Royal Stetson & my 25 is above the 3X considerably.

but then this one seems to gum up the works

Just to be clear, what I mean by my previous comment is that I believe that the gold medallion logos were still in use in the mid/late 50's -- so, the logo would be consistent with putting the Stetson 25 in that timeframe, as well.

That being said, I also believe that the gold medallion logos were actually in effect much earlier than that. The hat you mention is a great example, I think. It appears to me that there are characteristics of that particular logo that aren't as streamlined as later versions -- so this is probably an early version of the gold medallion logo, from what may be the early 40's (?).

It's not clear to me to what extent the gold medallion logos can be used to date vintage Stetsons with a great deal of accuracy. It does appear that, by the early 60's, Stetson had added color to that particular style of logo.

Cheers,

Interesting that this one brought more than a 3X that looked to be in the same condition. The 3X still had the lapel cord attached. Oh well, go figure...

I bid REAL high for this one because of the LO. It was reason to think twice with the wind cord missing and the ribbon trimmed but the over all condition was a plus factor and I can stop now.......for a while.....or not. I'll post when I get it. Push comes to shove maybe i'll find a cheap one too chewed up with the cord and ribbon intact and do a little cut and paste so to speak. Still cheaper than a new Sovereign anything and again the long oval clinched it.

I understand about the LO thing cause I'z got that shaped mellon, too. When you see them in your size, you're willing to pay the premium. I was just wondering out loud why this one was lower

It is same size & shape but seems much better quality & with the cord.
Did you bid on or win it? I forgot who at the Lounge took it home.

Stetson Premier Panama

I recently picked-up this Stetson Premier Panama. It's a nice looking Panama hat. Brim is 2 3/4", Crown is 4 1/2", leather sweatband. The pugaree is only 1'. I don't know much about it, although I would appreciate any help in dating it. If anybody has any knowledge regarding the weave, please chime in. As you can see it's spotted. I'd like to clean the hat if possible. I will more than likely send it to a professional. Does anybody know if just plain soap and water will do the trick? Anyway here are some pictures of the hat.
