This pullout from the October 1953 issue was the last "correct dress chart" that Esquire issued. (Sigh.) I photographed this at a library then cleaned up the photo to offset the low light conditions. Click for a full-size version. Enjoy!

I am appalled by the informality of the chart! It must have been drawn by an American!


Sorry, but I got tempted :)

Well, to be honest for 1953 a "VIP in town" category and suggesting that the best you can do for daytime is a dark grey suit is almost appalling. The British First Lord of the Treasury (aka as PM) still wore frock coat and top hat if the occasion demanded formality.
Aside from that a nice chart.
