Yeah, I was 12, almost 13. He had several top 40 hits, was on TV quite a bit, then boom. He was gone. s far as how I heard, I'm not sure. I remember it being all over the news, though. I was still listening to AM top 40 then. Didn't migrate to FM for a couple years.
Of course, anybody who writes a song called "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" would get my attention.

Along with "A Pirate Looks at Fourty" this is my all time favorite Buffet song. Just listened to it on CD Sunday driving home from the coast.

I was a big Croce fan. Bad Bad Leroy Brown got as much or more airplay than Big Jim. Rapid Roy was one of my favorites too. When the news about the crash happened it made me think of Don McLean's song about Buddy Holly, American Pie. That is what it felt like,"the day the music died".

Hell yes! Was doing my very best to channel my inner Billy Gibbons. That guy has tone to kill for! Anyway, was fun, except for the part where I was trying to pull myself out of the muck in the last couple bars of the opening solo. That was more painful than fun. Heh....
