Help identifying European military jacket

Hi folks:

I bought this great jacket at Johnson Leathers in San Francisco. It's a wonderful thick and supple olive green goatskin. Alan, the proprietor of Johnson, told me that this was a jacket he'd made for the Japanese market, and that it was based on a vintage European military jacket (he couldn't remember what country and for what military division). He had a few of these in his shop with the Johnson label sewn in because they were made with slightly imperfect hides. In any case, if any of the experts on the forum could identify the jacket this is an homage to that would be great! I believe he may have said the inspiration was a cloth jacket of some sort...Thanks in advance.

Common Enough to Find

Gibson and Barnes do one like that too in grey. Orange lining denotes Luftwaffe; grey lining the civilian version. So they say in the catalogue.
1950's to 1980's?

Yep, based on the German Airforce jacket, which was introduced in the 70s and which gets issued until today. The specs called for mid grey spray finish goatskin, orange polyester twill lining and no handwarmer pockets. It's a good jacket as long as you like the colour. It's well made although I am pretty sure that Gibson + Barnes currently make the best version though the fit might be a bit adjusted to accomodate the average "horizontaly challenged" American.

TAD Gear made a very cool limited edition jacket jacket out of it which was sold with one piece back, thicker lining, and olive green goatskin hide.

Probably your jacket was one of those jackets, that was relabeled?

Hmm I really like that German jacket! Shame the largest size they have it in is L and I believe I might need an XL.

There's been a guy on ebay UK selling them for £50. Great condition, big sizes (46" chest). They've been de-mil'd so there are some stich holes but hardly visible.
