Wow. How about some detail shots of the innards? This place is an archive of the history of these old hats, kind of an online museum.
Greetings All:
Thanks for the kind words. I’ll try not to let it go to my head.....only my hat!
Yeah Red i’ll get on that soon as i figure out how to do multiple pics in one post. I keep getting file to big errors when more than one pic. Not sure how to “resize” a pic on my iPhone hence all the “horizontal” posts. I’ll get it.
Be well. Bowen
PS: if someone wants to give me a “how to” inservice PM me. Thanks B.

Hey Red, i think i figured out multiple pics so here goes.
These are sad shape “before” pics. I need to treat the sweat before i turn it for tags (maybe). It’s filthy but amazingly comfy soft to wear. I’d give it a gas bath but i’m afraid i’d loose it’s crown shape and crease which i think is outfriggingstanding!! We’ll see.

Boy, this one is a piece of history. A thorough brushing might be all you want to do here. How intact is the felt? Looks pretty good for it's age.

Hey Red:
The felt is without flaw, soft and pliable (moldable). None of my other hats, as pliable as some are, come close to acting the way this one does. I can bend the brim any which way and it stays. I can even roll it up and it stays. How bout a 4 curl brim? Just took bout 10 secs for this one. Kinda fun hat! B
Edit: 10 mins later....still there!!! Crazy!! B

Several of us have "essentially" the same hat. Color, dimensions, ribbon and bow work, though my Fray sweat bears no markings of a model. Only that it's made by JBS in Philidelphia.
Hey Bama:
Your’s, the one i always had to take a nitro for, (kidding of course) was the reason i took a chance and went all in on mine. I’m elated i did. You are very right, several of us are very fortunate to have such gems.
Be well. Bowen

Bump. This thread is a good read. Going back to satiate my quest for the origin of "the Fray", I see that Alan was right about this thread. I still will welcome new members to "the Fray", but I now know more of the Stetson meaning of the term.

Stetson Boss Raw Edge The Fray, which arrived today. Open crown is 5 1/2 inches, brim is 2 1/2, would be 3 or so before curl was done. Store emblem done in silver foil. I'm guessing this hat dates about 1907 because a Boss of the Plains that's 3 Lot numbers before my hat has a 1907 inscription. The eBay seller, who's in or near Springfield, Ohio, said they'd bought this hat from a local history museum. The back of sweatband says "Kettle" as in Kettle Finish, but the Boss Raw Edge logo doesn't include the words Kettle Finish like some sweatband logos have on other hats.

A 1903 ad talking about the Boss Raw Edge with Kettle Finish. This ad was on Ask a Question, Get an Answer. The ad says these were the highest grade hats in the World.
