I posted a black straw Knox boater awhile back:

figured it was a men's hat but after coming across a similar color scheme/ribbon style on this Knox, I'm wondering if the boater I have was actually intended for a woman in mourning?

That one looks more strictly feminine (maybe that's because of the tilt and the sweep of the brim, and the fact that it's on a female manikin). Yours looks like a regular boater a man would wear, except black. Of course, women wore them too, and even if yours was meant for a woman to wear, it works as unisex.
