Leather Tanning questions

Hi Loungers, I am attempting to educate myself more thoroughly for an upcoming leather jacket purchase. Does anybody have a more detailed explanation (or links to) of the differences in the tanning process. Vegetable tanned, chromed tanned, aniline finish, dyed finish, ect. I have read about the different methods to tan a hide, but I don't know what the benefits of a hide thats been chrome tanned vs veg tanned, pigment dyed, or aniline dyed, and vice versa.
