Roger took off his jacket and threw it at the wall. First time he wore it and he ripped the sleeve and the lining. The perfect end to the perfect day and to top it off Yvonne wasn't coming round tonight. Leaving the jacket where it lay he took a beer from the fridge and tried to choose a dvd to watch again. His mind kept coming back to the real problem:

It had all begun five years earlier, just after he was discharged from active duty. His unit had demobed at Camp Roberts, of all places, and he was taking the afternoon Coastliner down to San Diego to meet his sister. While his train stopped for a while to change its crew and take on passengers at Union Station, Roger decided to stretch his legs, and found himself at the information booth at the station's entrance, leafing through a generic magazine. As he glanced up at the overhead clock to his right, he saw a young woman dressed in an olive-colored skirt, beige blouse, and tan heels slowly approach the booth. Her hair was dark brown, her eyes pitch black, and she had the pale skin of a person who doesn't get out in the sun much. She stopped less than a foot away from his right shoulder. He went back to the magazine, keeping her within the corner of one eye. Glancing at Roger's Class A uniform, she craned her neck a bit to look at his ribbons. Seeming to find what she was looking for, she then looked up at him, pursed her lips, and said,
