Measuring the brim?

When measuring brim width, is there a standard on where you place the ruler? Crown base to edge, or underneath from sweatband stitching to edge? Not to split too fine a hair, but there's about 1/8" difference when measuring most of my hats; 1/16" on some.

I usualy measure the brim of a hat on the top of the brim . Pick up the cord and measure the hat from the base of the crown to the edge of the brim .
Hats today are measured by 1/8"ths not 1 /16"ths . No one is that precise .
