I've noticed the basic construction and appearence in men's suits have changed little in 100 years. Men's clothing, for the most part, changed quite a bit through the 19th century but in the 20th it stayed realitivley the same. The suit seems to refuse to die. Why is this?

Maybe it's because the suit is the only thing that represents dress-up, either for special occasion or business. There hasn't been anything that looked different that has been able to replace it. Even sport coats define "dressy", even if everything else isn't.

I do believe you've described, "Style." :)
