Mojave Jack, you could consider posting any questions -- specific or general -- to the WWII list at iBiblio, whose readership is very well-informed.

In fact, former U.S.M.C chief historian Ben Frank was a subscriber until his much-lamented death a couple of months ago, and I think we still count a few Marines among out number, as well as other veterans of various years and historian, vets' kids, and teachers.

wenestvedt, thanks for the link! Hijacks are more than welcome when they provide great sources! I'll definitely be checking out that site. I'm sad to hear about Ben Frank. The best thing about good historians, though, is that they live on in the history they've recorded.

Dean, great poster and site, too. That EGA is very similar to the WWI era version, though the changes were very minor over the years.

He's wearing it too level to the ground. Unless you tilt it forward (as your cousin does), you are never going to look like a bad@ss.

Great shot of Marines in Campaign Covers, the caption said 1915, but I'm inclined to think it's earlier, there's not a montana peak in sight, and aren't those Springfields? I would guess 1905 or later but pre-1911.

Great shot of Marines in Campaign Covers, the caption said 1915, but I'm inclined to think it's earlier, there's not a montana peak in sight, and aren't those Springfields? I would guess 1905 or later but pre-1911. Oh, BTW, I'm sure it's flopped over image, the hat ribbon bows are on the wrong side, and the EGAs on the covers are reversed.

Dean, the bolt handles on the rifles (yes, they're 1903 Springfields) are on the correct side, so it can't be a flipped image. Has to be post 1911 due to the pistol on the second man from the left, which is in what I believe is a 1912 Model holster.

You're right! How did I miss those bolts?:eusa_doh: And the EGAs are tiny but looked at closely, they're fine. Then I wonder. Since it is at least 1912, does that mean the Marines were slow to adopt the montana peak, maybe because it was an "Army thing"? Or just a desire to maintain a tradition. It's such a good shot.
