Thanks for the advice and link, Ruvort. Interesting drawings. I tried the brim down on this Battersby when I got it, it just didn't work. Probably due to the fact that the brim is too wide. The Homburg on page 53 has a shorter brim.
This one is a bit of an anomaly. It seems to be a Fedora/Homburg hybrid. After I read your post, I tried the brim down again. Not right for this hat, it seems to me.
I'm experimenting at the moment with pinches, more brim curve instead of a flatter brim, and a more tapered front, almost coming to a point. It takes a lot of steam though as the felt on this one is particularly thin and not Homburg stiff at all. The felt on my previously "thinnest" Homburg is not as thin as this one.
I can feel, I'm going to be playing about with this Battersby for quite some time. And that's not a complaint [emoji4]

I think you may well be right about how my Battersby was meant to have looked back in it's day, ruvort.
This photo posted by AbbaDatDeHat in another thread has helped me see it in another light. However, I still don't like it, so I'm going for another look as mentioned.

I think this is one of the nicest hat images i have ever seen. It just stuns me everytime i look at it. I can’t even imagine touching it! Boy!!

I was very happy to come home today to find this Gledhill's waiting for me.

I bought it from our own @Bill Hughes, who was a pleasure to work with.

The hat is perfect for my physical makeup - A nice straight tall-enough crown, a moderate, for me, 2 1/4" brim, and a nice wide 2" ribbon. The front pinch is 4" high, which is right in my wheelhouse.

The hat has a c-crown, but I'll attempt to reshape it into a diamond just because I prefer them. A diamond will not increase the taper of the sides, as a center dent would (I already tried it).

As it happens, I bought another hat from Bill today before finding this one when I got home. Details to follow when I receive it.

One beautiful hat, Scotty! Love the color and shape.

I saw this Beaver Brand for sale and the photos were intriguing and the dimensions looked right. My curiosity got the better of me.

My hat:

The brim has some seriously deep flanging! I’m curious who it’s original market was.
The open crown was right a 5 3/4” and the brim is 3.5”. The brim is stiff and the crown is reasonably soft. I tried creasing it more western but the hat just didn’t look right and I suspect it needs more crown height to pull off the western look. The felt is dense and smooth and the darker spots in the photos are from my spot cleaning with distilled water. Aside from arriving very dusty (nothing new there) and some easily removed spots it’s in excellent condition with no mothing. I’m not a Beaver Brand expert, but it seems to have some age to it.

Good evening. I lucked up and acquired this old Stetson. I was hoping some of you vintage hat aficionados could fill in the historical blanks about this particular model. Age? Place in the Stetson line hierarchy....?

The brim length is 2 3/4” and the open crown hight 5 1/2”

I have to say the felt is very nice and supple. It is still a work in progress as I attempt to nurse it back into form.

You have fallen off the wagon in true form, I give you a 9.8! You didn't point your toes enough while in the air.

You said it, Red! I'm just catching up. Heck with all those hats there is no room to get on the wagon because its full. Now I really wonder what's in Stefan's attic.

And I keep looking at the black Tonak velour in the classifieds that @Tukwila is selling. I’ve come close to buying it half a dozen times. I was hoping someone else would buy it and remove the temptation.

I have to say that a brim with that width looks a little funky with the flange it has. I'm not sure how much the felt would let you work with it, but I might try flattening it out and drooping the front and back of the brim. I'm sure there's a term for that. In any case, that's my two pennies.

It’s an odd hat, Ryan. My concern is that it’s easy to flatten the brim, but hard to reflange it. Before I go for the irreversible flattening I want to explore my options. I tried it with a cattleman, Gus, and center dent first. The felt is reasonably compliant with steam. The center dent has the unfortunate tendency to give the crown taper whereas a diamond or teardrop tend to remove taper. I do want as little taper as possible.

I’m in the measure twice, cut once stage: I don’t want to make any substantial modifications until I’ve thought them through. A brim curl would take away some of the brim width. I can also trim the brim back incrementally until I like it. It’s just such an odd hat, and yet I can feel there is something cool hiding there if I could find a way to bring it out. I still wonder what market it was originally made for.
