I haven't posted in FOREVER, but thought this was an appropriate occasion. I've been growing out my hair, head and facial, since the last time I posted. None of my other hats fit anymore, or look right on me, thanks to the long hair. I visited Jaxonbilt Hat Company last fall. Had a great conversation with the owners, and loved the shop. Roy fit me for a hat that I was inevitably going to order. Well, a few months later, I ordered it. It arrived yesterday...and it is magnificent! My first bowler. You could do him proud! Carradine did my favorite Hickok, followed by Jeff Bridges for a close second.

Upon returning from holidays, a series of packages arrived in my absence, was waiting for me.
One I had given up for lost, another risked getting lost and others were waiting for me with their almost mysterious contents.

Three black hats, two certainly ancient, one is to be studied. Starting from the left: a Borsalino lobbia, a G.B. Borsalino bowler hat and a Flechet in black velour.
It is an anticipation, more news and photographs will arrive in the next few days.
That's the best way of getting back home: presents waiting for you!

A very classic Lobbia Borsalino in light and malleable black felt
View attachment 347677
Its peculiarity is that it was sold by a shop in Genoa, Sartoris, which has its own brand as a brand in the lining and not that of the Alessandria hat manufacturer.

Borsalino Qualità Extra Extra Superiore quality, the size measures approximately 58 centimeters or a 5 1/2 in the Borsalino measurement system.
View attachment 347680 There is no a tag size. and the internal measurements being 20.3x16.5 centimeters
View attachment 347681 From its features and dimensions: the curled brims are 6 cm., the ribbon is 4.8 cm and the crown at its lowest point is 10 cm seems to come from the 1950s

The paper label said us the type and nothing else, also because I don't want to force the sweatband which has some fragile seams

A very elegant homburg with a special felt for its softness and malleability

A timeless classic
Very cool find, Daniele. A classic hat. Interesting to see another liner than the Borsalino one. Maybe that is the reason why they put their name on the sweatband twice.

I'll be damned if that hat doesn't look 100% at home on your head. Nice!

I have a hat from the same store, same sweatband markings and the liner lacks the onion skin cover. It has the separate size sticker from the production sticker.

In my life as a collector I have found few hats sold by Sartoris - Genova with this lining mainly branded by the shop.
A few months ago I found four of our size, but I left them for the too high price, noting that some liners were slightly different in colors and graphics.
I thought Sartoris was someone with whom Giuseppe Borsalino had business during the first decentralization of production of the Alessandria company which built, around 1875, three new factories: Genoa, Cremona and Verona. All closed for various reasons before 1900. Probably the increase in transport networks allowed Borsalino to remain in the city of origin.
In Verona, where I live, there is good documentation on the factory which was heavily damaged by a catastrophic flood of the Adige in September 1882. Reopened after a year it was definitively closed in 1885.

This year I found more bowler hats than at any other time in my life as a hat lover and collector
Bombetta GB Borsalino 4.jpg

Most of them were made by G.B. Borsalino fu Lazzaro, arrived in splendid condition for their age of centenarians, and sold in Italy.
Bombetta GB Borsalino 3.jpg

It seems as if the upper class had put the great-grandparents' hats on the market.
Bombetta GB Borsalino 2.jpg

G.B. Borsalino fu Lazzaro "Qualità Finissima" sold by Luxus in Palermo, size is 5 1/2 so a 58 centimetrs in EU and a 7 1/8 in US.
Bombetta GB Borsalino interno totale.jpg

Bombetta GB Borsalino taglia.jpg
The peculiarity of this ancient beauty is the pleated ribbon, difficult to find on this so formal hat.
Bombetta GB Borsalino 7g.jpg
It has come down to us in beautiful condition, without damage or missing and the interior is practically new.
The paper label said the model is "Oslo" and nothing else, if not numbers
Bombetta GB Borsalino etichetta carta.jpg
These are the measurements of the G.B. Borsalino fu Lazzaro bowler hat: the curled brim measure 5.5 centimeters and the ribbon is 3 centimeters, the maximum height of the crown is 10.5 centimeters.
Bombetta GB Borsalino 5.jpg

I sincerely hope the field is not exhausted :)

Miller Bros. western with a pug I really like. The hat is a couple sizes too small for me, but I know a guy…. :)

I didn’t spend any time shaping it as it is destined to be re-blocked. The felt is stiff/firm and exactly like similar felt from Resistol and Stetson from this period.
Generally I don't like pugs but this one is a good one.

n my research, from time to time, I also have luck, or rather perseverance
nero-flechet-1-jpg.348680

This magnificent Flechet has had a troubled life. Purchased, the seller has disappeared for two weeks, then the bank details have arrived for payment. After the expedition, the hat was lost in Europe and then returned to its base in France. Sent back, he disappeared again and at my request for information I was told that my address was incomplete. After the verification of the mendacity of the statement I moved the European post without having any feedback. I lost a great hato_O it was my weightlifter. Then my children phoned me about a package that arrived with countless stickers and read the sender, with extreme difficulty, I calmed down
nero-flechet-3-jpg.348684
Flechet in black velour size 5 French (57 centimeters) or 7 in the United States.
nero-flechet-6-bis-jpg.348689

This is the third Flechet velour I find this year. The difference with its "brothers" is the texture and weight of the felt. the previous two were light and the surface very soft, this is much denser and heavier with a more evident "hair"
The paper label says it's quality is "President" and there is another stamp inside the sweatband I forget to copy

Probably, looking closely at the lining, it can be deduced that from the aforementioned awards this is older than its brothers I had in the previous months
nero-flechet-pelo-interno-totale-jpg.348703

The sun allowed me to highlight the velour finish of the felt, but for those who are curious here is also the diffused light version
nero-flechet-4g-jpg.348709

The dimensions of the Flechet, probably made in the late 1920s, first 1930s are as follows: brim 6cm, the ribbon is 5cm and the crown at its lowest point is 10.5cm
nero-flechet-2-jpg.348721

A hat arrived in perfect condition like the other centenarians found in this "miraculous catch"
Here the photographic set "en plein air" at the base of the wisteria in a hot summer afternoon

Here's a little comic relief after Daniele's tour de force above.
A pity/exploratory purchase (<$20 shipped ; ) Turned out to be a completely serviceable and fun little lid. It better be as it's "100% Genuine Fur" and true to promise, does have a very nice hand. No liner, labels or indicator of maker. I assume it's a Langenberg/Beaver Brand.
