Hi All,

We've touched on this before, but I'd like to settle the issue.
Which felt and Panama hats are safe to roll up?

In a thread I can no longer find, someone (Powers?) said
that you can tell the roll up Borsalino because it doesn't have
a leather sweat band. I have certainly seen roll up Borsalinos
without sweatband. I know that some roll up Panamas were
similarly made without leather sweat bands.

But I know some hats with leather sweat bands can be rolled up.
Maybe 10 years ago I purchased a Biltmore (Canadian Suede) sold
to me as rollable. I did in fact roll it up many times and it would
happily pop back in shape. The leather sweat band got plenty
wrinkled, but the hat was serviceable and presentable. Well, until
I wore it while traveling in Vietnam and rolled it up wet a few times.

Anyway, I see Borsalinos from time to time that have leather sweat
bands that look like the one in my rolled up Biltmore- wrinkled, but
otherwise in nice shape. Surely some of these are also rollable? I have
been told as much by a guy who bought a "Lightweight" in recent years.

So who wants to weigh in on how you can tell if a hat can be rolled,
which hats were rolled historically, and which hats you personally roll?
Clearly we're not talking about Homburgs, tops, derbys, or stiff western hats
here, but rather soft felt and Panamas. Just how can you tell?
