The Razor's Edge

Feraud said:
Bingo.

Had a great shave last night using a Gem 1912 and TOBS avocado shaving cream. I've used double edged razors for the last twenty something years but have converted to the single edge.
The shave is so good I may never go back to the double!

I am old enough to bow before bravery greater than mine. I knick myself with the disposable double edges. I am apalled at the thought of the check my wife would soon cash if I embarked on straight razor shaving (assuming that suicide was properly rejected). I want to see my grandchildren someday.

Hot towel one minute.
Merkur futur (gold) set on 4
Feather blade - Day 1
Windsor soap. (gold tin)
Windsor Pure badger.
Old spice.

First trial of the feather blades. Nice and sharp but not worth twice an astra blade. Feathers here work out at $0.49 where astras are $0.25.

Twas only 4 my friend.

I tend to change it depending on the blade. For some reason this new feather blade wanted a bit more on the dial.

My futur is generally set on between 1 and 4.

(strange you should mention the straight.. I just bought one of those.... thats next! )

I think you'd really enjoy a shave with a Gem razor. They can be found all over ebay. They are a single blade and just about as good as a straight. I find them to be slightly more gentle than double edged razors but that is just my opinion.
I bought a couple of them, including a newer model off of ebay.

Look for quality Gem blades or equivelent blades in the shaving section. WHATEVER you do, don't buy the scraper blades from a hardware section as those are not sharp enough to shave with!

Hold the blade almost flat against the skin to shave, just a slight angle.

The newer ones are chromed and the older ones may have celuloid handles in either white or black.

The one Feraud has may even be older and be made of brass. Those are real classy and can have slight variations in design.

I like the Gem just fine but always fall back to one of my straight razors.

Today's setup...

vicshave1.jpg

Software:
Windsor shaving-soap in vintage English shaving-scuttle.
Windsor badger-hair shaving-brush.
Hot water.

Hardware:
GENS single-sided leather paddle-strop, made in Solingen, Germany.
Double Crown extra hollow-ground straight-razor, made in Solingen, Germany.

I didn't actually use the honing-stone, it's just there because I took this photo for another purpose, originally...

This was my first shave with an injector! I've been using DE razors for a couple years and decided to pick up an injector on eBay and give it a try. It was a lot different from my Gillettes, but I like it. I got a close shave with no nicks--that's not bad for me with any unfamiliar razor. I'll definitely keep this one in the shaving rotation!

I think I'll keep my eyes open for a Schick Type D or F. The bakelite handle on the Type E is pretty, but I'll bet the metal handles have more heft to them. I prefer a handle-heavy razor.
