Shudde Bros. Hatters in Houston

Here is my latest (I should probably post some of my others) Shudde Brothers hat. It is an interesting Stetson Twenty-five. This has the appointments like a OR but is one of Stetsons many "other" like hats and in NOT marked as a OR. This is a LATE 1950's early 60's and while thin, the felt is nothing like my other earlier 25 (which is a marked OR and is quite nice). It was in rough condition and in need a lot of brushing, sponging, special formula powders and just plain work to restore.
It has a 5 1/2" crown and a 2 1/2" bound brim. Sewn lining is two tone golden yellow with a darker shade tip. The felt is...OK, and very thin and dense. Sweat (roan) is nice and wide and has the sweat register behind. Color is a nice Silverbelly shade. I will now wear it tonight....will probably be an everyday hat.:)

Check out the "wind cord"....it is a elastic band with a button....not even attached to the hat. It is for looking at....could be an "add on" from a dealer (Stetson may have not added one for a sort of Strat look) or Stetson just being cheap. I have found no evidence of another cord having being attached.

1703200220724.png

And the liner.......note the welted darker tip.
1703200320771.png

Here is the sweat...a nice 2" roan.

Interesting addition of a "long oval" tag along with the complete size written key hole, makes me think early 60's...

AND the all important Shop Stamp (for this thread;)).

Further proof that this logo did exist by the late 50s early 60s. It is unusual the separate size and long oval tags.. usually you see the off-white/yellowish long oval tags that ran for a longer time. These twenty fives can be a bit of an enigma with elements from different years. I think Shudde Bros could be a wild card here. That debossing looks a bit deep for 1960s … but it has been my experience the Stetsons made for Shudde .. especially back then… have been of the highest quality. My Shudde OR has a feel to the sweat not matched by other period Stetsons

Yes, in fact it was introduced around 1955. There has been some ads around hear somewhere and I have something in the vault too.

I do have another Twenty Five with this logo along with a fractional only keyhole tag. I believe it was one of their (Stetson's) longest running logo for the Twenty Five. I think it has the blocking tag too......did not someone post a sweat dated one in the Twenty-Five thread? I cannot remember....
PS: The debossing is very deep and nice on this hat......;)

And as promised another Shudde Brothers. This is a light Silver/Grey Resistol 10X Beaver, 6 cord (6 cords are a favorite with me).......and its box!
This has nice proportions and a pencil curl giving it a real planter vibe, a little over 4 1/2" crown as creased, 3 1/4" out to the end of the turn back of the pencil curl. NICE felt has a great Suede finish (almost Velour). Very petable.....;)

The first Shudde Bros hat I bought, a Beaver Deluxe bought from Brent in May 2022, a couple of months after the hat collecting bug bit me. Pics are from his ad here on the Lounge. I gave this hat to my niece.

Shudde Bros Pure Beaver, Custom Made. 3 1/4 inch bound brim, 5 3/4 inch open crown. When purchased, hat was unshaped/open crown and appeared to be never worn. I'm guessing it dates to 50's or early 60's. The pics here are shown elsewhere on the Lounge. This is the only Shudde hat I've seen with a mfg or reorder tag.

Shudde Bros Beaver Deluxe, 3 1/4 inch raw edge, 5 1/2 inch open crown. Had a cattleman's crease when I got it. Dates probably mid 50's to early 60's. These pics appear elsewhere.

1982 dated Shudde Bros Beaver Supreme, 3 1/2 inch brim, about 5 3/4 inch open crown. Had cattleman's crease when I got it. Had it reshaped and new ribbon added. Last pic is as I received it.

Shudde Bros Beaver Deluxe. 2 7/8 inch brim with Cavanagh or Mode Edge, 5 3/4 inch open crown. It dates no later than early 50's. The liner has onionskin over it. The Cavanagh type edge may suggest this hat was made from a Stetson blank, or is that possible? The felt in this hat is much softer and less stiff than any of the later Shuddes, just as Stetson Western hat felt from the early to mid 50's is softer than later ones.

Shudde Bros hat, 2 1/4 inch bound brim, about 5 1/4 inch open crown. Probably dates to 1950's because the felt is somewhat soft. It's not given a model name so I'm guessing this is Shudde's lowest or standard quantity hat. While quite decent, it in no way compares with the Beaver Deluxe, felt-wise. Maybe this is something like a 3X hat.

There are mixed opinions about where Shudde Bros got their felt bodies. Some think from Stetson, some think from elsewhere. I don't know enough to have an opinion. Besides making their own hats, Shudde did sell Stetson hats, but those hats, as expected, had Stetson sweatbands and liners and presumably mfg tags. The following hat is a mystery to me. It has a Shudde Bros liner and sweatband, but has a keyhole type size label from Stetson. So is this a Stetson or a Shudde? There aren't any mfg tags in it. This hat doesn't have a Stetson sweatband, so was a Stetson size tag just put on a Shudde hat?

Shudde Bros (or Stetson?) hat. Dates no later than early 50's because it has onionskin on the liner. 3 3/4 inch brim and 5 inch open crown. Has thick soft felt. There's no model name or quality level on the sweatband, so this is Shudde's standard quantity or lowest level hat, I think. If this is a Stetson hat, then I don't know what to think. Bought this hat this week.
