Not bad! A&F was a great classic outfitter before The Limited bought it and turned it into a preppy farce that retails shredded jeans and softcore porn to teenyboppers. Teddy Roosevelt was a famous A&F customer who was outfitted by them for his African expeditions.

Absolutely! Abercrombie & Fitch was a great place for clothes, guns, and more.

As Matt has indicated, your suit is from the mid 1950s, not the 1940s. (I think BK also mentioned that its union tag probably reads "1949", but was misread as "1940".) It's a classic sack cut, very much along the lines of Brooks Brothers, J. Press, Rogers Peet, Chipp, and other "preppy" clothiers of the time.

Good job! I would immediately unbutton that top button. A&F carried great stuff back in the day. I see Oxxford stuff with A&F tags on ebay all along. I wonder who made your suit.

The way the lapel is pulling it looks to me the suit is cut to be a three roll to two. I think the top button is meant to be unbuttoned, and that you'd see a more natural roll.

suit

that is a swell suit-
I dont think it was intended to be worn w/top button open, the button stance( gorge) is lower and coat appears to have more waist suppression than Brooks etc.
later than 40's but a great find.!

Speaking of Oxxford, that lapel notch has an Oxxford look about it. I'd love to see some pics of the underside of the lapel, particularly where the lapel buttonhole is, and also of the interior of the trousers.

FYI, there is no relationship between button stance and gorge(the point where the collar joins the lapel).

Too Bad, So Sad! Kind of a social commentary IMAO

My dad had some A & F articles too. I will have to ask my mom if she still has any of it. It won't fit me anymore but perhaps I could find homes for them?

Marc, the jacket has darts.[huh]

Yes, and I've seen sack suits from the '50s, '40s and '30s that had two long and shallow darts, one on each side. This is different from the more fashionable "hourglass" suits of the '30s and '40s, which tended to have four deep darts, two on each side.

I'll post photos tomorrow to show what I mean about those early sack suits and their darts.
