What Size Trenchcoat?

I have two trenchcoats, inherited from my father and grandfather, that fit okay but not that well.

I'm looking around ebay at some good deals and wondering: what is the rule for sizing them?

For instance, I wear a 36R suit jacket. Would the right trenchcoat be one or two sizes larger? Or do they figure in the neccessary room for a 36 coat when they make a 36 trenchcoat?

Thanks.

I've well, my marine surplus trenchcoat is a 40L and fits great over my 40L suits. So, I would go with your actual size. When in doubt, buy in person and try the thing on.

They are generally sized up to fit over a suit. But when in doubt, take your measurements when wearing whatever you would plan on wearing under the coat and go up roughly four inches from that to get the chest measurement you're looking for in the coat.
