Mine, in order of preference are:

1. Sean Connery
2. Roger Moore
3. Pierce Brosnan
4. George Lazenby
5. Timothy Dalton
6. David Niven

Connery is the quintessential Bond by which all others are measured. Although Moore is a very close second in my book. In fact my favorite Bond films star Moore.

Brosnan made a worthy Bond as well, although I wish he'd been Moore's successor instead of Dalton. By the time Brosnan finally got the role his best years to have played Bond were already behind him.

Lazenby was lackluster, and Dalton just plain sucked as Bond.

I like Niven, but he didn't seem like Bond to me, and I really don't consider his Casino Royale a real Bond film anyway.

He was offered the part but turned it down because he considered himself to be too young at the time. He is my favourite Bond...so far.

Connery always seemed close to Ian Flemming's protagonist.
Lazenby never quite fit the character.
Dalton had some edge.
Moore played a sarcastic wit.
Brosnan had to cope with implausible scenario.
Haven't seen Craig.

He didn't turn it down; he was contracted to television's "Remington Steel." He tried to get out of the contract, but they wouldn't let him. The show lasted one additional year.

Roger Moore was far to much of a Ponce for me--I cringe everytime I see him doing anything action-oriented. Honestly, the Moore films are more Austin Powers then they are James Bond. "Judo CHOP!"

Connery was good; Brosnan was a bit too polished at times (though Goldeneye is one of my favorites).

Dalton was the most 'real' james bond--he came the closest to the novels, until Craig came along, and honestly, Craig is now my favorite.

Lazenby...I'd rather pretend like he never happened.

Cheers
Craig

Craig, the one exception I would like you to mention each time you say this is "For Your Eyes Only," which is one of the best films in the series and a return to Connery style intrigue. ;)

Lazenby was a great Bond! Connery as well. But I had to vote for Lazenby since On Her Majesty's Secret Service is my favorite 007 flick. OHMSS was so ahead of its time in regards to action and pacing. The fights were fast and brutal (much like in the latest flick, Casino Royal). I still have a crush on Diana Rigg! Telly Savallis (sp?) was great as Blofeld. The ski chases are amazing! As for ol' George Lazenby, he got a bum rap having to follow Connery. It's too bad. I think he did a fine job.
