He didn't turn it down; he was contracted to television's "Remington Steel." He tried to get out of the contract, but they wouldn't let him. The show lasted one additional year.

I didn't know that about the RS contract but he definitely said in an interview that he considered himself to be too young for the role at the time. I took that to mean he turned it down. My mistake :eusa_doh:

Hem,

I can see where you are coming from--yes, FYEO does have a lot of merit, and is arguably the best of the Moore films, but overall, Moore as Bond just doesn't float my boat. A bit like Julia Roberts--a lady I simply can't get warmed up to. She's good occasionally, but overall, I think her films are poor, as such the success doesn't redeem the failures (in my opinion they are failures, because I don't like the film).

Perhaps we have, through this, COW, and FedChron, hit on the beauty of the Bond series? That is to say, with over a half century of material, a plethora of actors, Bond and Villian alike, and so many different styles, everyone can and does like Bond for different reasons. Just reading over this thread, some like the campy invisible Car Bond, others like the gritty Dalton-esque bond, still more like the Classic Bond of Connery. The world's favorite secret agent has something for everyone :)

Cheers

Connery

But i will most certainly give Daniel Craig a chance. One movie will not do it.The newest film was good and i will own it when the DVD is released.
Craig is gritty and not the Bond many expect.

Connery will always be THE Bond until something else does better.
Moore,in my humble opinion, might have been good for the elegant and academic Bond, but as a fighter he was just as bad as Dalton and Brosnan.
Don't mess up that face now or Bond can't attend the next evening gala event.
Connery looked good with a pummeled face even.

Poor Lazenby really was not that bad.He didn't have a chance. And the film was made at a time when,to me,Bond was not as appreciated.
Dalton really is not a good actor in general.

Just my $.05 (increase due to inflation)

Bond ... James Bond

Best Bond - Connery

Best Bond movie - From Russia with Love

It makes the later ones look silly. "Russia" is a real cold war thriller. No over-the-top gadgets or "super-villains" just a good old-fashioned cloak and dagger thriller

Love it

Connery was the best by far. Moore played it as a parody for laughs. Brosnan finally made it work for me as a believable Bond with a comfortable, serious approach to the role. All the rest need no mentions for they are totally forgetable. They seemed to never get comfortable with the role or the character. They recited the lines but were never the Bond of Ian Fleming's creation.

Part of the dismay is the responsibility of the production company which attempted, after Connery, to jack up the tongue in cheek humor to a silly degree along with circus stunts of the Evil Kneviel level playing the Inspector Gadget routine to a nauseating amount. That crap became the Bond movie instead of a Sean Connery punching a bad guy in the mouth on a train.

Making the next incarnation more visually outrageous than the last in some perverted one-upsmanship juvenille video game style of cinimatography has pushed the franchise far beyond the bounds of good taste and produced a bizarre sci-fi-like parody that would have Ian Fleming spinning in his grave.:rage:

Regarding George Lazenby, it’s important to remember just why he was not asked to perform again as James Bond. It was not due to his acting ability, nor was it due to his reception by the audience. Rather, Lazenby was rather full of himself and tried to muscle in on creative decisions that were not the purview of an actor. For example, he insisted that the soundtrack be composed and performed by Pink Floyd.

Now I happen to like Pink Floyd. But the decision on the soundtrack is one of the Director and Producer, not the actor. So Lazenby became too difficult to deal with. And with that reputation, his career ended.

But I like On Her Majesties Secret Service. I find it rather gritty and less—prone to Austin Powers-style super-villains. The ski chase is very good and the helicopter assault is fantastic. And, of course, Dianna Riggs, perhaps the greatest of the “Bond Girls”.

I think that Connery is by far the best Bond, plus my dad looks like Sean Connery - like old Connery in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, not young James Bond, Connery...

Connery, Sean Connery is my first choice and Brosnan is my second. In reference to the invisible car, the US and British goverment is working on that technology at this time. They are trying to get it to work for vehicles and clothing for soldiers. The principle is tiny cameras and monitors. It takes an image of one side of the vehicle and projects it on the other side making the vehicle or the person to appear to be invisible. They say that at a distance, it works pretty well, but closer up it has a shimmering effect. I saw it on the discovery channell awhile back. Dont know if they have any that are actually working at this time, but I would sure love to have one. You could speed by a Highway Patrolman without him knowing what was going on. His radar would register 100 mph but he wont see you.:p

Connery is my first but Brosnan is a close second.

I would love to see a re-make of the Lazenby film. The story is phenomenal but the production and acting is beyond flawed.
