Zipper question

I have a leather jacket with a zip problem. At the end of the zip where the lug is and where the two parts of the zip slide in together - the half-inch nylon sheath (name?) has come off both sides leaving just the material. No rips or faults in any other way. Is that a problem? Does that nylon sheath do a vital job?

If you look at any vintage jacket (probably anything pre-seventies) they don't have the nylon sheath. The old jackets had only the cloth zipper tape or sometimes an extra square of cloth by the bottom of the teeth. The nylon sheath just protects and extends the life of the cloth material. You won't have a problem until the cloth rips. On my jackets when the nylon has peeled back so far that it is not helping I cut it off with a small scissors.
