It´s about 14 inches.

Thanks! I won't inflict my German on you. It's a barbaric version of a beautiful language...

Hey MB5, care to share any more details about your suitcase? Where did you get the raw materials including the brass hardware?

It looks like a cool project! I would love to do the same but am not quite sure where to start.

Skull Art

This is a gear shift knob that was suppose to go onto a hand shift custom motorcycle. To make a long story short, the guy chickened out and went with a foot shift! This sat on my desk until yesterday when I decided to mount it to an old marble trophy base. It was suppose to be an easy job, drill and tap the skull, put a bolt through the base, done. Of course it turned into a two day job, don't they all! I decided to put a threaded insert into the skull, that got jammed, so had to get the cut off wheel out and make the insert shorter. Then I decided to clean up the base and polish it. Then I decided the skull looked dead, pardon the pun, so out came the old model paints. It does look better with the white and black cuffs and the gold cuff links, kind of classy! Now at least it wont fall over every time I bump my roll top work desk!

Don't Press The Red Button

Stearmen, do you make custom car shifters, too? I've got a project I need advice and ideas on, trying to figure out the "Little Red Button" for a Men In Black LTD.
I bought this one. I still have not watched Men In Black, I know I don't get my head out of motorcycles much these days! I would think, as long as it is not a automatic transmission, a shift knob with a red button would not be to difficult to make out of either aluminum or resin, assuming the button is not to large!

Hey folks I've been planning on starting a smallish line of leather and canvas goods. Here's a prototype wallet I built a while back. It's kind of rough but that's because it's completely hand made. I should have myself a nice industrial machine real soon which will refine my work a bit. If anyones interested in having me make them one pm me.

Where do you get decent leather for that sort of thing? I have some cheap craft stuff lying around, but that's nowhere near the quality I would want for doing something like that, which I've played around with the idea of doing. Heaven knows I can get bored enough to just start playing around with the sewing awl... A messenger bag and a pair of slippers are the two results so far, and it could be fun to do more.

1940s Trousers

Here are some blue trousers I made from a pattern from EvaDress.

These brown ones I just finished with the Hollywood Waist and almost a 13'' rise.

Please give me some feedback. Thanks.

I like them a lot. I am almost tempted to start sewing too. My girlfriend is a seamstress but always busy. I am jealous of the skills to make things that are unique

Great work! Are these the 1940s trousers? My only note is on the blue pair, the front dart (it looks like a dart, not a pleat, am I right?) puckers a bit at the bottom. Not a big issue.

I've got some fabric for another pair of the '34 trousers, but I've been thinking about ordering the '40s pattern.

Trousers aren't a bad thing to start on. Better than shirts, collars are tricky.

Yes they are Nick. 1940s Wide Leg Trousers. And yes that is a dart on the blue ones; I also noticed it puckers a bit on the bottom, but since it was practice I let it slide. On the brown ones I followed the same idea on the 1940s EvaDress trouser pattern, but I also copied some hollywood waist slacks that I have. I had to basically make a new pattern cause' those were more wider than the EvaDress pattern.
Thank you for your input. I want to continue making these style pants cause I have several friends that already want a pair. Also, I will post better pics with a side view soon.
Thanks Nick.

Johhny J, those look great!

Here's my latest finished project, a collarless shirt. I copied the pattern from an old shirt that had gotten a hopeless stain on it. Turnback cuffs, flat-felled seams, enclosed stud pocket for the back collar stud, two-piece yoke, and side seam gussets. There's no front band, and no front interfacing, making it very simple, clean, and easy to do. The sleeve placket also has an interesting construction, with one side of the slash simply rolled and the main placket a simple rectangle.

Next shirt will have a horizontal bottom buttonhole (which this one was supposed to have but I forgot), and I need to figure out a simpler way to sew in the side gussets.

For the next shirt I have a great brown and tan tattersall, and I'll give it barrel cuffs and make a couple different collars in self-fabric. After that I have a nice brown, blue, and black check that will have an attached collar.

Wow! Very Nice! The shirts I like are those 40's style with the longer peaked collars. Have you made one of those? I have not tried anything else, but the trousers. I would like to get more experienced on one item, even though I am tempted to try a coat; looks like alot of work. I just started to unseam an old coat I have and, man, talk about alot of work.
Have you made a coat before? Any pics? I seen the vest you made and its very nice too. Keep up the good work.

Thanks. I've done the point collars as well, there should be some photos a few pages back. They're a lot easier than rounded collars, particularly the top stitching.

I have the Vogue suit pattern, a 1950s McCalls blazer pattern, and the EvaDress belt-back pattern, and none of them really tell the whole story of a suit jacket. I'm working on the belt-back right now, it's slow going, but I'll have pictures when it's done.

Found the pointed collars you made. Looks great. I don't have any coat patterns, but I may try to just copy one, preferebly DB coat. But I'm going to be doing somemore hollywood trousers. My brother and a couple of friends want a pair. Since fall and winter are around the corner I was thinking of making some either in a nice wool flannel, or tweed. When I go pick the fabric I guess I will decide then.

Hollywood Waist Trousers

Here are another pair of 1940's style Hollywood Waist trousers I am finishing in grey for a friend of mine with a 10 1/2 zipper and 12' rise.
