I have always liked the blue smoke. Is it very versatile? Does it go with grey? I am so tempted by the black cherry but BobC has indicated his pub enemies hat is more formal and he felt limited in when he could wear it.

Definitely goes great with gray. I've also found it goes pretty well with a subdued blue. One of my favorite ways to wear my blue smoke VS is with a gray sweater, khakis and a white scarf. But that's more for cold weather. If you're concerned about versatility, I'd probably go with blue smoke over black cherry, although they're both wonderful colors. -M

Depends on the grey. A grey with blue tones (a cool grey) looks great with blue smoke. But the warmer brown-greys don't look as good.

Interestingly, when Art saw my "oxblood" Public Enemies hat, he insisted it isn't oxblood at all but black cherry. Having seen the two colors side by side, I'm now a believer and I agree with Art.

I hope Bob that you don't mind me speaking for you on the color. I think I must go black cherry next, especially after my wife said Bart's is pretty. I have to act quickly if I ever get any sort of green light from my wife, who I think secretly inside doesn't like my hats. I hope that changes after we meet everyone in Dallas in March.

I just now received my tracing number from the vnerable Mr. Fawcett. It will be a long rest of the week. Other than the color of the hat and the dimensions I have no idea what it will look like or anything about the ribbon. I'm quite positive I'll be pleased though. Stay tuned for pictures probably this weekend.

Really? They're identical? I always knew that Optimo's oxblood is closer to black cherry, but I didn't realize they were the same. -M

Umm, I think some wires got crossed here.

What I believe BobC was saying is that Optimo's "Ox Blood" is really a misnomer. Ox Blood is generally a redder shade. Both Optimo's "Ox Blood" and Art's "Black Cherry" have more shades of purple. And although the felts are VERY close in terms of color, they are not, to my eyes, identical.

Ah. Still, you can see why I would think that, given that he quoted Art as saying that Optimo's Oxblood IS Black Cherry, and he agrees with Art. -M

As far as I know, Optimo is the only people who have their "Ox Blood" color*. John Penman had mentioned a while back that he could get the same "Ox Blood" felt (as Optimo), but there wasn't enough interest at the time to justify him ordering a run of it.

*and believe me, I've been trying to get an Optimo-esque Ox Blood hat without the Optimo price tag since before the film came out! I eventually landed on Black Sheep Hat works, who is hand dying some felt for my next hat....but I digress, back to Art's beautiful hats!

Art gets his bodies from Winchester and formulated the new colors he now offers exclusively; oxblood, black cherry, sunset, etc. Optimo gets there bodies elsewhere. I'm sure someone could speak to this better, but I tend to believe that Optimo holds tight to their own colors and wouldn't let another hatter get their mitts on their special bodies.

That pretty much sums it up according to Art. I believe Art's comment in Monteagle was something to the effect of "They can call it anything they want, but that's black cherry." Of course, I will yield to Art's comments and corrections here if he chooses.

I still really like my Optimo "oxblood" without regard to the name of the color.

You are correct. My Optimo black cherry is a more formal hat, ie wider ribbon, bound brim, traditional bow, but that could be easily remedied by changing the design of the hat. I don't think the color itself dictates a dress hat or a more casual hat.
