I just got a moonstone Fed IV size 60 a couple months ago (wearing it in my avatar) and I'm not about to give it up

Got mine on eBay -- opened at $50 but grabbed it for $125 on Buy it Now, because if I didn't, someone else would have.

Check out the Stetsons for sale in this section, by Blackthorn. They're only 50 bucks. If not one of those, try ebay.

Got a mint condition Royal Stetson on ebay. Looks unworn. Color is mink with brown ribbon. Size is 7 1/2 which I found a bit too snug. I guess I'm somewhere between a 7 1/2 and 7 5/8. I have no idea how old it is. Is there any way I can tell from the tag or box? If this was made in the last 20 years, will it hold up in rain/snow? I just read in some other threads (after picking this one up, of course) that modern Stetsons aren't as good as vintage ones. Was snowing today so I left it home.

As for an Akubra, I guess I should consider a size 61?

Yes in a Fed IV definitely. In a regular Akubra you would probably still need to go for 61 and wait for shrinkage to happen. A Fed IV in Heritage is a wonderful hat and will shrink to fit like a custom. I am like you in between 60-61/7.5/7 5/8.
