I first tried Papa when I was about ten years old, but didn't understand a word of it. Then in my early 20's I read The Sun Also Rises, Garden of Eden and A Moveable Feast. And all the shorts, of course, which are mindblowing. I've probably read everything by now, not to mention biographies.
Truly, a great writer.

If you're ever in Heidelberg, Germany be sure to go to Hemingways!

They do a great breakfasts. One of them is called a Männerfrühstück (man's breakfast). It only consists of a beer and a shot of Jaegermeister...

Hemingway remains a cipher; mercurial and enigmatic, but The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell To Arms offer a brief glimpse of the man. :)

Hemingway: Wisdom from the Past

Excerpt of Ernest Hemingway's introduction to Ben Raeburn's 1946 book, Treasury for the Free World:

"We have waged war in the most ferocious and ruthless way that has ever been waged. We waged it against fierce and ruthless enemies that it was necessary to destroy. Now we have destroyed one of our enemies and forced the capitulation of the other. For the moment, we are the strongest power in the world. It is very important that we do not become the most hated….We need to study and understand certain basic problems….and remember that no weapon has ever settled a moral problem. It can impose a solution, but it cannot guarantee it to be a just one. An aggressive war is the great crime against everything good in the world. A defensive war, which must necessarily turn aggressive at the earliest moment is the great counter crime….We never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime. Ask the infantry and the dead."

"Now it is very pleasant to hunt something that you want very much over a long period of time, being outwitted, out-manoeuvered, and failing at the end of each day, but having the hunt and knowing every time you are out that, sooner or later, your luck will change and that you will get the chance you are seeking."

From "Green Hills of Africa".

These lines speak volumes to us that do hunt. And in it's own special way to all of us ......

My favorite short stories by Hemingway are "Hills Like White Elephants" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber". I think he was at his best when he was at his briefest.

HadleyH, I think it's only now occured to me the inspiration of your FL username, even though we've both posted here for five years. Previously, I just believed your name to be Hadley!

*cough* Suzy Parker *cough*

You are absolutely correct! There were a handful of models who defined the fashion of that era. and both Jean and Suzy were among them! It is said that Jean Pachett appeared in more covers than any other model, in magazines like Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Glamour etc....

Some of Jean's covers for Vogue:

In a previous life, I was a HUGE hemingway fan. I read every Hemingway book I could find, and every biography I could locate. My personal favorite is "the Sun Also Rises"; I dont know why, I just like it best. He is a fascinating character; at one point in time he was my hero. I wanted to travel, drink, hunt, write, carouse with the society types.

"For luck you carried a horse chesnut
and a rabbit's foot in your right pocket.
The fur had been worn off the rabbit's foot
long ago and the bones and the sinews
were polished by wear. The claws scratched in
the lining of your pocket and you knew your
luck was still there."

"There's going to be a moon tonight" said Nick. He looked across the bay to the hills that were beginning to sharpen against the sky. Beyond the hills he knew the moon was coming up.
"I know it." Marjorie said happily.
"You know everything." Nick said.
"Oh Nick, please cut it out! Please, please don't be that way!"
They sat on the blanket without touching each other and watched the moon rise.
"You don't have to talk silly," Marjorie said "What's really the matter?"
"I dont know"
"Of course you know"
"No, I don't."
"Go on and say it"
Nick look on at the moon, coming up over the hills.
"It isn't fun any more"

Ultimately

He tried to spit out the truth;
Dry-mouthed at first,
He drooled and slobbered in the end;
Truth dribbling his chin.

Succinct and concentrated ... always effective.
