I'm convinced that they took away the smoking and the drinking primarily because the airlines and the TSA are behind this show. We can't make flying look too good- because we all know that isn't the truth in modern times.

The public might not so nicely go through a full body scan, pat down, and a baggage search if they know other options- comfortable and pleasurable options- exist for traveling the great blue skies. ;) I mean... it would just be sacrilege to dishonor modern day flying in that way...

(This is a joke. I honestly don't think the TSA is behind this show. Please don't send the Feds to my house. Please.)

PSA may give you a lift, but it was Continental who had "The Proud Birds With The Golden Tail"... what were they thinking?

Somehow I keep thinking of: 1) Orwell's 1984 the history was re-written every day. 2) The re-release of ET where they used digital CGI to remove the guns from the governmnet agents persuing Elliott and ET.

TV just needed another excuse to make the American public believe that the women of the past had as little class and distinction as the current crop on TV have.

No morals, no credibility, just desperate housewives looking for sex in the city.

And this is how it all started! what a difference a century makes! ;)

The first women flight attendants in the United States were hired in 1930 and were required to weigh no more than 115 pounds, be nurses, and unmarried (Pictured below is one of the first female flight attendants to serve on Swiss Air in 1925)

My mother was a Stewardess in the 50's for Western. They were not "Flight Attendants" back then. And based on what I have discovered since then, they all may have looked classier, and did a better job of hiding indiscretions, but there were humans like us. Which in short means, they enjoyed the whole thing immensely. It was a huge deal back then to fly, and certain airlines catered to stars, etc. It was more glamorous, and raucous to boot. Don't kid yourselves that those cute photos mean they were all angels! And I say that with all due respect to my mother, her friends, her colleagues, and the industry. Just look at how crazy Hollywood stars were back then. The "appearance" was certainly more polished, but they partied like hell. First hand knowledge. Not speculation. That being said, today's Hollywood - TV specifically - blows, and will screw up this potentially good series.

^^Sure, stewardesses years ago were not all angels, and had to be good at hiding any indiscretions. I believe, though, that Sam's point was that the media often portrays people from the past in an anachronistic way, making them seem as loose on the same scale as witnessed today. Those in the business may have "partied like hell," yet we're not speaking of actors here, but of stewardesses. Just because certain airlines catered to the stars, that doesn't mean that the latter automatically hooked up with stewardesses once they were on terra firma. My sister began flying with TWA in 1972, and over the years told me many stories about her and her fellow stews, which sometimes did include some "indiscretion" on their part. The majority of the time when they were on a layover, though, they would do a bit of sight seeing (sometimes with the pilots), and then go back to their respective hotel rooms at night (often having to get up early the next morning for the next flight). Again, was there some dallying going on? Of course, but it wasn't what we'd call the norm, and hopefully PAN AM will not misrepresent this.

^^^ points taken. Yes, I'd wager they will make it appear as though that era is just like today's (lack of ) standards, evict of course, it was not.
Even just hiding it shows they had more class. Well, in my opinion. Maybe we're all fooling ourselves...

^^Hopefully we're not all fooling ourselves, Butte. Well, let's see how the pilot turns out first, and go on from there. I would imagine that at the least it won't evolve into an aviation version of The Playboy Club (which debuts the week before Pan Am). Interestingly enough, my sister was also a Playboy bunny in the late-'60s over at the Sunset Strip club. Many stories about that experience...
