That's the exact model I had! I declare, whoever designed that stock must have done his apprentice at Purdey or H&H. It is so quick handling and smooth. The more I think about it the more I regret selling it. I hate when that happens . . .

Oldsarge, the handling is why I will never part with it, and hope my son keeps it. It's rare to find a bolt action than handles so nice.

When I got it it had a tiny hairline crack in the toe. I made some blocks to fit conform to the area lined with a strip of leather, then some wax paper. I worked a bit of Gorilla glue into the crack, then apply my blocks and clamped to close the crack. Then cleaned up. It's still holding. and the crack line is hidden in that wild grain in that area. I did have to clean up the checkering a bit with a tiny riffler file. Now the only visible defect is a tiny gouge in the foreend tip which is best left alone.

I have an 8 x 57mmJS; 98 Mauser, guild rifle with the same lines! Built in December of 1923. Love it. They are sweet!

This fine lady was a labor of love as it had been fired by the previous owner with the action bolts loose, fracturing the stock in several places. As well as splitting the wood at the toe of the stock. I did a refurb on her with some good bedding, several pieces of 8 x 32 brass all-thread stock repair bolts and a good piece of oak dowel behind the tang. I installed an old two-leaf "Express" sight in her cleaned up read dovetail. She is good as new! Shoots like a dream.

Last January while on "Safari" ;) I took several nice trophies with her!!!!!! Here' the rare un-reticulated Serengeti pygmy rhino! :eusa_doh: Thatfell prey to my Mauser

Okay this pic has nuthin' to do with the above rifle, but it was too cool a pic not to post of one of our "pop-up" targets. This was the "rogue lion" that had been terrorizing the locals!!!!! :D

That "safari" looks like a hoot! I wish someone in our part of the state had something like that set up.

I just notice that the photobucket pic I posted the other day has been "moved or deleted", any ideas what's going on. That old rifle is not that risque!

Yup. Until you develop a side income to pay for that sort of thing she'll spend the rest of her life doing that. I ended up in the Army Reserve, possibly for that very reason. It was worth it. For twenty-nine years that check was my play money and now the retirement check is. Definitely worked for me, YMMV.

Well, though my wife has so far come from "you may NOT have a gun in our house!" to "well, you can have a "home defense" shotgun, but that's ALL you need!" she still insists that "you don't need a gun! it's a waste of money!" despite my telling her that not only are they tools, but in many cases (at least the ones I'm looking at) they're works of art, both to own and shoot!

Finally I said "we'll set a % of our budget up as "mad" money, so whatever our income, it will stay the same percent." If she wants extra shoes, jewelry, hats, or anything else "superfluous", she can spend her half of that percentage, and I can use my half on firearms... problem solved! (ish) lol now I just have to find a good Mauser for the $$ I have... (any ideas on good quality [still fully functional] sub-$100 M98s in the Florida area?) :p

Unless you are very lucky you will will not find anything in the $100 range. You might look at Allans Armory , classicarms.us, or empire arms.

Classic arms has some Swiss straight pull rifles on there sit at sub 300 prices, which for what you are getting is a good deal. They are among the finest, most accurate military rifles made.

Simpsons probably has more than anyone else listing old guns.

Here are a few links.

Renault, I've heard about those rare Two Dimensional Pygmy Rhinos, if they turn on you and give you a paper cut it's all over! Just have your gun bearers dig a hole right then and there! By the way, really nice shooting, I'm envious.

You can probably find a bubba'd Yugoslavian-made 7.92 Mauser for @ $100, if you're patient.
I'd suggest signing up here http://www.flaguns.com/
and looking for a face-to-face deal local to you.

For instance, it took me two minutes to find this - it'd need a front sight (doable yourself if you or one of your buddies have some mechanical skills) and it's 7x57mm.

Tomorrow morning I am off to spend the week in Las Vegas, attending the RMEF National Elk Camp. We have a booth there this year (2nd time). RMEF is a grand show if you love hunting the high country but even better the Safari Club International Show is there at the same time. Talk about killing two birds with one stone. I am going to be one happy individual, can you say kid in a candy store. Now if the wife will sign off on Cape Buffalo! :rolleyes:Any one else going to be attending either show? If so send me a PM perhaps we can get together and discuss mutual obsessions.
