It's mostly marketing (vs. soft felts) but it is a lighter more flexible Bowler (Melone in German) style.

Actually, it came creased that way, I call it the "Mountie" look, as opposed to the Montana peak,
which is side dented instead of fore and aft.

Long time manufacturerers? Not too many in fact. Since luxury watches are the big hype again, companies have been bought and sold all over. Most of the time it´s just the name that´s left,
like with Lange or Glashütte.
