Agreed. I prefer to leave the hat bash etc alone and tilt it on my noggin as needed.

I recently watched "Harvey" with Jimmy Stewart. The hat he wears in the film is battered and the crease appears to be tilted like the ones in the picture above. Not sure if it was intentional or if the hat was just well-used.

He still appeared to be dressed well, regardless of the condition of the hat.

I actually have a Velour hat (probably late 1950s) from the DDR (East Germany) that is blocked slanted to the back.

I have a very similar model made by Portis. The "New Slant". It no longer sports the slanted bash.

Like Frank said, "It's all in how you wear you hat!" Having somebody else put the rake in it seems to invalidate the whole statement, but that's just my opinion.

However, in my defense, it doesn't seem to have been a very popular option, so maybe I'm not too far off the mark.

you guys think the hat here worn by Todd Karns is a hand bash or this Stetson Slant? ... could be one of the various "slant" models made by other manufacturers

I guess we will never know really ... looks cool either way

I can't be sure, but I'll guess Todd Karns' is a hand crease. The Slant hat may have even been hand-creased at the factory. Look at all the pics in the threads with old photos. In group shots you seldom see two hats creased the same and you see some pretty unique creases. My mother-in-law, who was born in 1917, once told me that in her day men expressed their individuality by the way each one wore his hat, flipped the brim, or creased the crown.

My guess would be this is a hand bash Moreover the crown height in the advertisement looks much, much lower than on the hat work by Karns.

As an aside, many of the old Stetson ads (Whippet, *******, etc.) show crown heights that appear (to my eye, at least) notably lower than the height preferred by many members of this forum. Anyone else notice that?

I always assumed the slant was blocked ...

must have been time consuming to hand bash slants on an assembly line no ?

Philosophy, I think some of it is how those hats are shaped for those adds. My Whippets, *******s and Stratoliners have a fair amount of variation between them when it comes to crown height but they all seem to be in the 5 1/2+ range. The 40's brought in some bigger brims which changed the whole crown height to brim size ratio but it is also true that 30's and earlier hats I have tend to be in the 5 3/4+ crown height range with 2 1/2 or smaller brims
