In all fairness, I don't remember the guides of yore discussing function as such, where the goal is to be a guide on size and shape.

I never use those guides on ratios as the 'right ' type of hats for my mug just don't ring my bell. I've got to like a hat as an object first, I've got to be attracted to it, want to wear it; so I couldn't care less whether or not some dudes have decided it isn't right for my physique, I've got a thing going on with the hat & that"s all that matters.

Yes, the art of fitting faces is only part of the picture. I think the head & shoulders profile is another factor in the mix. I think of it as angles - imagine lines from the shoulder edge touching the side of the head and coming to a point above the head, a pyramid with a slope angle particular to you. Imagine the same thing from the effective edge of the brim touching the side of the crown and coming to a point above the hat. The overall look is generally better if the slope angle of both imaginary pyramids are similar. I've never actually made any such measurements, this is just a subjective consideration.

It's a bit vague... I'm not that fond of the sketches either.

I have a customer who went in there to try out some hats.
They missed it by a mile. I did everything over Skype and the hat fits like a glove.
She wasn't fond of their materials either.

I've never seen any of their hats in person, but they don't really look that great. ( from their website)

To me a good looking hat looks good on any size or shape. If I thought anything it would be that low tapered crowns with stingy brims look good on no one. My focus is on the hat not how I look in it. I assume I don't look good and the hat isn't going to make or break that.

But, hey, if these guidelines give people the confidence to get into hats that's a good thing.

Yeh, I wear what I am drawn to wear regardless of what is supposed to look "good". The only style I can't wear is a pork pie, it just looks funny on me. A Goorin shop opened here in Vancouver a few years back.....cheap hats at NOT cheap prices. It is located in the "hip" part of the city and sells ****py hipster hats at inflated prices. The clerks are not hat people either....not their fault, just doing a job.
