I see that JJ Hats finally has some offerings on their "New Arrivals" page (the first since Christmas, I believe). They're all straws and appear with no indication of the makers, but one's the "Brooks", which is Bailey, I believe, and several others have the identical feathers as a Capas Bogart I wasted money on some time ago (it was supposed to be my size but was very small, and the cloth sweatband gave me a rash after it's one and only wearing). It's the same feather arrangement as on the Stephanos and various others. Overpriced junk.

Last Thursday I take off on my lunch break to hit the first day of a Big Estate Sale; they had actually put it the listing: Stetson Hats, which is rare. So off I go. The sale was crowded enough that, even though it had been open for a while, I had to grab a number and get in line (OK, so maybe I stretched my lunch hour a bit). Stood there for a while and thankfully saw that nobody was carting anything that looked like a hat out, and finally got in. I inquired, "where are the Stetsons?" and was directed to a shelf with two Mid-80s 4X ORs in their boxes. "Sweet!"

Well, they were 7 3/8, and frankly, they wanted too much for them for what they were and what I'd use them for, which was resale. I resolved to go back on Sunday, when Items were 50% off to possibly pick one up and perhaps sell it on OFAS. I decided to take a quick poke around to see what else they might have and came upon a closet with a few more hats. Cheap ladies' straws, a kinds crappy wool Bailey, another Stetson western they also wanted too much for - even if I wanted a western.

But there it was, sitting on atop, of all things, an Elder's hat box (Elders went out of business in 1962 when it was bought by a local retailer, Beerman's), a nice brown/tan thin ribbon OR-style lid. Picked it up - great, thin felt - turned it over to find...

And this was affixed to the liner tip:

I plotzed. No resale, here, my first Borsa (I knew I bought that box a couple of months ago for a reason!

A few pictures here, more crossposted to the Borsalino Brotherhood.

A bit off topic, but I have been shy to try a gas bath on my hats. What do you do with the gas once it has been "used"? You must know what you are doing since you were brave enough to dip that beauty in there!

I run it through a coffee filter back into the can and reuse it. I've cleaned (counts on fingers) four hats this past week and a half, including the Playboy I received last week, though. This gas might be at the end of it's life. I'll have to see what it looks like after filtering. I've also taken to putting one of those metal grates they use to keep pizzas warm to keep the hat off the bottom, so it doesn't stew in the silt after the last one. Seems to be working OK. This hat cleaned up pretty well, but not perfectly. I have to admit I was a little concerned about the corrugated sweat, but it's all good.

Thanks for the props guys!
