I'm trying to figure out what this color might have been called

a friends father who is a fedora collector and who used to work in the mens department of a clothing store selling hats told me that he would call it Peacock Green
... sounds good to me ... I wonder what Lee called it

If I read Mr Bower's guide correctly it dates from sometime during the 1950s. Similar dimensions to the Whippet I was wearing earlier today with 2 3/8" brim, 5 5/8" open crown and 1 5/8" ribbon.

Thanks Bob. I don't think I have much groove left. And the Goodwill was a total bust this season. Oh well. The Hanover Square is pretty nice. Fortunately most of the mothing is in the dent and on the underside of the brim.

Thanks Richard. There has been an unusually good run lately. Usually they put out the hats for the season around the equinox and then it is thin pickings for new stuff after that showing. This year a couple of new ones trickled in that were a step up from the usual. And yes, I was on the bike today, but I threw in a little legwork too. Ha ha.

I have had some nice ones, including several I bought over the summer and am just now wearing for the first time. I visited the 3 "best" thrift/antique shops here today and found nothing I was willing to put money into. I've got a couple of road trips for work over the next few weeks, maybe I'll have better luck in the small town shops. They'll only have westerns, but that's ok by me.

Great looking ascot. Austin Reed was not a manufacturer, so it was probably made for them by one of the Denton or Stockport based makers. The union is actually an English one (based in Denton); it's been around since 1872. It was formed to represent men working in the hatting industry. It started life as Amalgamated Society of Journeymen Felt Hatters and Allied Workers and one of their early campaigns was against the employment of women in the industry in the West Midlands. There's more info on this union on wikipedia.

Now for a bit of light cleaning. It might be easier if I knew what these things were made of. Sounds like stiff card under the felt but could be thin ply. The felt is probably fur but, just being a thin covering over the board, it's hard to tell. I guess a little washing up liquid and water couldn't do much harm and maybe some lighter fluid if that fails?

To my eyes & your pics it's a blue spruce. There is a varity of a blue spruce tree that is more blue than green. Think if it being a shade bluer than the Akubra BGG. Or maybe more of a teal blue than teal green.
