I sure like that tone of gray. Great looking Akubra.

Yay! Sunshine. Sure like that ribbon color. Is that a Stetson pin on that bow?

Yes, Mike. It's the only modern Stetson I've left the pin on. For some reason, it works on this one.

Great Mac, @mmbarnes. Found you something to go with your jackets and t's.

Oh, criminy! If they make those in women's my wife is going to demand a pair!

Well I purchased my first hat 2 weeks ago and it was a wool felt pork pie. I started reading about hats on this site and I became aware that fur felt and vintage are generally better quality hats. I saw a hat on an online buy and sell site. It was an hour and a half drive away but I decided to drive there. It seems that I take a 7 3/8 size and this one was listed as 7 1/2.

I arrived there a few mins ago and didn't even try it on before purchase. I just tried it on now for these pics.

It turns out to have a box it was sold in in the early 1950s. It is a biltmore Canada box but inside the box is a grey Stetson Whippet I believe.

Now my big question is how to clean it.

It needs a cleaning in the ribbon and the hat looks like it needs a little cleaning.

However inside that hat is really clean with no staining.

Any suggestions?

Will

Way to come out of the gate, Will! Yes, looks like 1950s, early 60s Canadian Whippet. Wolthausen had the license for Canadian Stetsons at that time. I was getting ready to say "it's really not a Whippet" because it didn't say it on the liner. 1950s US Whippets were on the liner; the very old ones have it on the sweatband. This, however, is definitely a 1950s+ hat. As far as cleaning, start with a good brushing or vacuuming, then brush with steam (do NOT get the steam near the sweatband). Only if it's really dirty or stained would I recommend a naphtha bath.

Great pick-up! Welcome to the club (and please post your hat in the Whippet thread).

Tried to get out and back home before the 50 mph windstorm hit today. Just to be safe, I went aerodynamic with the Dunstatter Mystery Derby. I had the sweat replaced (old and crumbled stitching on a non-reed original) so it is an all purpose, wearable go-to derby.

Beautiful derby, Mike. Is it blue or gray? It shows up dark blue on my phone.

I pulled on some of my warmest clothes and I'm sitting here shivering. I think my upstairs neighbor, Influenza Dean, infected my on out weekly grocery trip.

Taking stage today at our local community theater. Wearing my beater, set building hat. A late 1950s Stephen L. Stetson, Olympic Quality. This is an interesting hat with features such as a Carter Sweat band (a buttoned in design). Had the ribbon replaced by Mike Miller of NW Hats, but otherwise a nice example. I call it a beater, but a vintage beater it is.

Nice hat, I like the color and finish on the brim. What exactly is "Carter Sweat band" ?

Before I found my way to the Fedora Lounge and began learning about the wonderful world of vintage hats, my usual daily driver was an old off the shelf Country Gentleman felt that I picked up at Dillards Dept store. Paired with my old 1940's era navy peacoat I still like wearing it now and then.

Such great hats. That Lobbia has great lines, interesting color name. You always look great.
Today I have a meeting with a professor on campus. I will be a guest lecturer, speaking about Eugenics! Higher education in the United States promoted this "Science" during the early 20th Century. OSU fell in line and taught classes in Eugenics until the mid 1950s. I figured my Echter Borsalino in Dattero c1955 would be appropriate. Sorry for the archive photos, but I will be wearing the same outfit today...maybe with a new 1950s tie though.

Thank you, Mike. I think I can return the compliment, because you're always both the gentleman and a scholar (but the church ladies had already spotted that of course).
