If that is where you choose to turn your attention. However, it's also been noted that we live in a golden age of entertainment. High quality television, such as Breaking Bad, The Americans, and the various cable and on line offerings give us a much better bang for our entertainment bucks than we used to get. But it's always satisfying to look down on the rubes who like low-brow entertainment.

Aw, Breaking Bad! An actual enjoyable show with a true anti-hero. Really sick of reading long lists of so-called anti-hero's who aren't. Walter White defines that very character. I watch maybe 3 shows these days or re-watch old ones, or go back in time for my entertainment. My tv is off most of the time.
Never watch reality shows. It's the main reason for the lack of well done scripted shows these days on cable or network anymore.
Maybe we can blame Tom Cruise.

My idea of reality TV is sports.
"Reality" shows are heavily scripted.
There is plenty on offer from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and cable channels to take up any free time you wish to use on watching television.
I've like Mr. Cruise in some things.

I miss my Mavs. Why were they so bad this season? Sports are the only true REALITY in tv these days.
Yes, they're "scripted" but not in the way stories are told. Like actual plot, structure, and such. I feel ill when people start talking about things like The Bachelor. No. Just no.
Not all of us can afford every streaming service out there. I'm sure they have great series, but, limited budgets as well (at least some things on Netflix). But, they also seem to be killing the classics. Everything has to be new and shiny, ya know.
I don't mean to be hatin' on Mr. Cruise, just thought this thread was funny.

Neither do I. I put Tom Cruise on a long list of actors who have somehow managed to create some form of on-screen persona (regardless of their acting abilities or lack thereof) that some people have responded to. Shining example: John Wayne. Audiences didn't really care what the movie was about, they just wanted to see "John Wayne". And he made a lot of money for himself and the movie studios by being "John Wayne" in almost every movie. Sure he tried different things occasionally, and those movies were usually not as successful because audiences didn't get the "John Wayne" they expected. For the most part, the same goes for Tom Cruise--people go to see his movies because they want to see "Tom Cruise". And, like Mr. Wayne, by making movies he's keeping a lot of people working and making the money they need to live their lives; regardless of whether the movie is "good" or "bad", keeping people employed is a good thing. So I'm not a fan, but I give him credit for being able to maintain a career in an industry that can be very fickle.

The best movie Tom Cruise ever did was Risky Business. It's been all downhill since then. It's kind of like listening to U2. They peaked in 1984, and it's been a sad, mostly unlistenable cliff dive since then.

Nawww, Edge of Tomorrow (2014) was great! But now that I think about it, my opinion might be formed by the fact that his character is stuck in a time loop and gets killed over and over and over throughout the movie...

As far as agreeing on things, I wouldn't be so sure about that.
U2 has some great songs, but a LOT of not so great.

Did they put out an album after "Rattle and Hum?"
What really turned me off was Bono and his self important bloviating. Whether I agree or disagree with the positions they take is irrelevant. You are an entertainer, not a political or social scholar. Shut your piehole about your personal views and do what the public pays you to do.
The fact that Rattle and Hum was their last decent work has made him easy to ignore.

Low-brow or not, it amazed me that the BBC reality show, Strictly Come Dancing proved a big hit not only in the US, but around the world. Most countries renamed it Dancing With The Stars. Latin & ballroom dancing has been a lifelong pleasure for my wife and I and so we watched the first series on the BBC. About dancing it is not, it's more like fodder for the gossip columns in the, to use your phrase, low-brow, newspapers.
Months before a new series starts there will be all sorts of newspaper speculations as well as journalistic insults like, who? Meaning that the so called celebrity is a "Z" lister. The show makes millions for the BBC, but as an inspiration to take up dancing, it probably puts more people off than it does inspire them.
