A defeat :(
The photos were low quality and the hat was practically folded in two. I took a chance because of the bound wide brim. I now suspect it was a cheap homburg, but in any case it’s wool...a fact the seller left out and I didn’t ask. The seller’s photos also didn’t show the wool mark on the sweat.

Even with steam the brim does not want to snap down hence my homburg suspicion (it was listed as a fedora). With shipping less than $20 so it’s write off. Bummer.

Strike two: a mystery Standard Hat Works of Waco, Texas in NOS condition. This is a quality hat with a nice hand. The felt is finely pounced and I definitely could have found a place for it in my rotation. It’s a lords hat, and a wider brim version that I really like. No tags or labels hiding under the soft supple sweat.

The only other marking was penciled in on the back of the sweat: “3/8”

Which explains why this is a defeat. There is not way this hat will ever fit me. I can return it or resale it. I’m undecided.

I think a trip down the street to Ignacio is in order.

In all seriousness, I'm sorry these didn't work out for you. At least it wasn't a complete financial defeat, other than the disappointment of buying two hats and neither of them living up to the satisfaction of wearing them.

Thanks, Ryan. The Dobbs was intended for someone else, so the disappointment is minimal. I’ll donate it.

The gray lords hat is a bummer. I had about $45 including shipping in it, so not much there either. As it was misrepresented I’ll have no problem getting a refund, but I wonder if another Lounger might want it?

I don’t think there is an Ignacio close to me. Another bummer.

I posted these at new hats, as they are new, they were also a deal. The straw is a Bailey Outen Toyo. That is really a square nail with a sideways feather. Won't be able to wear it for months, but I got it for a little over $10. It is now listed at $88. The second is a Bailey Meren litefelt wool. Now listed at $76 I got it for a bit over $21. On the Bailey site they want $110 for the Outen. As for the Meren it looks like it's discontinued.

Picked up this "derby" a couple weeks ago:

The seller pointed out the frayed ribbon "flaw," so I also mentioned that the crown was slightly dented (I've since recreased it as shown). As such, I was able to haggle the price down another 20%.

Cavanagh homburg added to my modest hat collection. Interesting that the brim binding is quite large compared to most Cavanagh homburgs that I've seen on FL. Only seen a couple with this wider style.

Great catch. I have a Cavanagh in Midnite colour as well, which was sold to me as "black". It does take the right light to see it is in fact a very dark blue. Great colour. The brim binding on yours is more a European style. I wonder what it is with the Cavanagh hats though: my Cavanagh fedora was sold as a bowler as well, just because it was open crown. Who am I to argue?
