When I started wearing felt hats in earnest, I cleared out the bulk of my ball caps, keeping only a few to wear while working on cars and such.

I've sold several hats over the last year, thinning out several that didn't fit quite right or just didn't get worn very much. I sold one custom simply because a fellow lounger wanted it more than I did. I miss that hat some, but not terribly, and I take pleasure in knowing the new owner loves it.

Greetings All:
I kinda wish you hadn’t started this thread. I try not to answer this question when asked because i don’t know.
However, recently i had to organize my hat house because i only had 1 place to sit and one place to lay down. Heck, the dog was even starting to pace about.
So, in the spirit of Steps 1 and 5 i admit to all i have way to many hats and it is unmanageable. I need to sell about 100...err probably 150 but don’t know how to start. I’ll never be hat sober but maybe manageable
There, i said it out loud.
Guess i better do something now.
Be well. Bowen
Ps: full disclosure, i’m not funnin here!

How long have you been collecting? Maybe having a large hat size has been a blessing in disguise?

I like this thread. Sort of confession time. Entertaining to see how reluctant several of us, myself included:), are to divulge how many hats they actually have.
Seems to me to name an actual number (and I do know how many I have) is both confrontational to myself and feels a bit like showing off to others. I do think I have many less than the masters of the lounge, like Steve, Alan and Daniele. Let's say I have a good deal more than a 100.
Me, too

Meanwhile, to start the new year well, I decided to close the hat collection by 31 December 2018.
No more purchases, additions to existing hats, my size, or historical hats of other sizes.
The reasons are many and too long to explain.
My collection is eclectic, without myths or hats to have absolutely. The European market is totally different from the American one. My hats, living in one of the hearts of world production, are largely Italian with a good representation of the French and a handful of Central Europe.
I have reached a number of hats that is more than 250 and less than 300.
The exact number is impossible to determine and they are really too many.
Steve said he could wear a hat without repeating it for three or four months without anyone noticing, the same can say about myself.
It's time to stop and in the next few weeks I'll sell a part of the collection starting from the hats not of my size, then I'll go to those a little tight or wide.
You are advised, so if you have concerns, ask.

Greetings All:
Okay...this is the new view from my perch. I actually wanted to lay on the couch and maybe have a place for others (ha) to sit so here’s a pic before i mess it up. Goodwill gets about a hundred pounds of boxed books and i should be severely beaten for what i put in the garbage bag!! I know it would make a thread or two happy. Argg
The downside....i have no idea where my babies are. I wanted my Churchill 50...it’s on top in the corner. No way i can get there without breaking a bone.
Man...this hat stuff is dangerous work!!
Be well and safe. Bowen

I think this is an interesting thread particularly in light of the popularity of Marie Kondo. I think there is a "collector's" mindset, healthy and totally separate from "hoarding". Some of us have a predilection to collecting, some do not. I have always had some manner of collection on the go....when I was 5 it was bottle caps and now it is hats (50 at present).

My wife on the other hand is on the opposite end of the collecting continuum, (good thing as space would then be even more of an issue in our house). I also collect/build vintage mountain bikes, at one point reaching 30 now down to 12. She has one and when I offered to build her a second bike she replied that I had built her a bike she adored...why would she want or need a second. I don't understand or relate to that perspective but then I have the collector's mind set. She has but 1 fedora and is not inclined to buy a second. She has however drawn a line in the sand of our closet....I am not allowed to encroach on her side any longer.

Kondo asks us to ponder each item we own and jettison that which does not bring us joy. Well, weird or not, I ponder my hats and the ones I have kept (all 50) bring me joy.

I read you post quickly and when I read the "no idea where my babies are" it gave me pause to think, okay that could be problematic but then I realized you were talking hats not actual human babies.

Sandra just saw this picture and said.... oh my, does that belong to another crazy hat guy? I thought you were the only one!

I think she was kidding. I'm sure she knows better than that!
