Nice pairing, Cuz. I like the toe shape of those Stallions. What's your opinion of the water buffalo? I used to have a jacket made of it. It was a super thick hide, but soft and sort of stretchy like deer skin. It had a real distinct grain.
Yesterday I got out and kicked around in the 4X open road. Today was the short brim straw Resistol.

Thanks, Dale. Great hat selections. WB for a cowboy boot has been popular for awhile, especially the calf. I have two pair and it ranks up there with great calf and kangaroo, IMO. A jacket would be made in a "garment" grade leather, probably not even tanned the same way and if the skin came from certain areas of an older animal, it would probably be stretchy and heavy, no doubt. I've often wondered about the provenance of leathers. W/O the skills developed over a lifetime of dealing with such products and an electron microscope to compare samples, how do we know what we have.
I know most of us can differentiate between elephant, shark and alligator among othersd but how do we make the distinctions amongst smooth leathers?

I don't think most laymen could be expected to tell the difference between the Asian Water Buffalo & the African Cape Buffalo, or deer vs antelope, when some can't tell the difference in stamped vs exotic.

When my son was a teenager & ostrich leg boots became popular he wanted a pair. I used to kid him by telling him they were really made from the skin off those giant turkey legs they always sold at festivals in Boy Scouts. Somehow turkey leg didn't sound as appealing as ostrich but he ended up with a pair of Nocona Boots which are still around here somewhere.

I appreciate you considering my reputation. I had never heard of such things but I read a story from boot maker Tex Robin who talked about a leather salesman bringing him som sample skins once, along with some salmon skins that had been tanned for boot making. Tex said the salmon still smelled fishy. These turkey boots show up every so often, usually with a big asking price.
Another unusual boot leather that shows up occasionally is alligator gar. Don't want any of those either. Here's a pair of Nocona's that showed up for sale awhile ago.

Just now realized the similarity of the crease. Wow!
Took a chance on this NOS, POS hat a couple of years ago and disliked it so much that I sat it aside, not anxious to wear and not willing to forward what is not a good hat. Anyway, I took it down the other day and misted and steamed and beat the crap out of it for that moderate brim curl you see. I'll rest up before I invest more time rolling the fenders a bit.
I bought it looking for a 4x6 or so to shape up and put a wider ribbon and bow on or a hitched horse hair band. The finish is rough and it's not stiff, it's harder than Chinese arithmetic. I'm pretty sure the sweat is real leather but I ain't betting. The hat is just "shiny" to me and screams 80's. It really doesn't matter. It''s not one I'd water my horse from; it took quite some time to wash the dye bleed from my hands.
