Topped 80 today, first wearing of the straw.
50s/60s era big brim Resistol. The 4" fenders are nearly as high as the crown

Bamaboots, what might this model be called? I really like the three-ply ribbon.

Lefty, thank you, I do not know as there is no model name on the sweat or the liner, which is quite common with Stetson. It’s a 3” brim x 6” crown. I have seen a #1 quality, and 3X with the same dimensions and the bound brim and 3 ply so, a particular model could probably be assigned by scouring the Miller-Stockman catalog pages from the 50’s when Stetson offered some models from #1 quality to 7X CB and the 100 on a couple, I think.

For a few years now I’ve wanted to have a J. B. Books Shootist hat. The Duke wore this hat in several of his westerns, but I associate it with The Shootist. Today I bought a hat I have no plan of ever wearing simply because I wanted to use the rattlesnake skin hat band for my project. Now I need to find felt large enough. I considered using a current Tom Mix as a donor hat, but I want something better than Stetson’s 6X felt. I figure I need enough felt for a 7” open crown and a 4 1/2” brim, and it has to accommodate my 7 5/8 long oval head. That’s a lot of felt. Does anyone know of a source of high quality huge hat bodies? My one custom western using Winchester’s 50/50 beaver and rabbit is plywood stiff. I know I can’t get the equal to vintage felt, but I don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars for nasty stiff felt either. I’d appreciate any help offered. Thanks.

the desired hat:

The donor sweatband (I’m leaning toward removing the rattles, but not completely decided).

Ironic. I have a rattlesnake band on my Tom Mix and always thought I needed a taller hat to make it work a little better. Here is the hat you're looking for I think. The crown appears to be taller than 6 inches to me though.

Thanks. Maybe 6” as creased, but I’m thinking a full 7” open crown. I’m really just looking for raw felt as I have a hatter in mind.

The current 6X Tom Mix crown is 7” (at the back) so it really has the dimensions I’m after. I don’t want a bound brim edge and I’d like a better quality felt.
