Always nice to buy an old hat at less than half of its original price. Stetson 7XCB Open Road (as unboxed). Later production with the typical stiffness of that era. Nice hand though. A little dirty and it looks like a mule kicked it a couple of times.

With a 2-3/4” unbound brim I’m not sure the judges will approve it’s inclusion in The Open Road Guild.

The other hat was full price though. Dobbs Westward VVL Twenty. What a hat!

2-1/2” thinly bound brim with a 4-1/2 crown as creased (same crown height as the 7XCB). Some dirtyness and, unfortunately, two moth nibbles under the ribbon at the back of the crown.

They weren’t kidding with the VVL (Very Very Light) branding. We don’t have a good scale in that range here at the farm, but it almost feels like half the weight of the Stetson.

The crown easily creases to any shape desired and the hand is quite nice as well.

The VVL is VV Nice. Don’t see too too many westerns in ultra light weight felts.

Nope! I’m having one of it! This is clearly an imposter and not a genuine Open Road. I think it should be burned immediately to keep the blood lines pure. Now if it was a 7 5/8 or 7 3/4 I could find a way to overlook the heresy and wear the heck out of it.

Bristol / Anton Peschel Dinkelsbühl "Excellent" "Bella", 58 cm later 1960s. This hat came Open Crown so unusual for a later German made hat. The Felt has a really fine color and finish and easily dry creases. The Curled Brim has a bit less Flange than a Homburg and the Brim Binding is thinner so maybe a less formal Homburg. I don't think it would be considered a Camber type but is somewhat similar. Whatever it is it looks great especially considering the time period. Also some mysteries solved! (see below).

Open Crown

I am not sure why I missed this but the "Bella" mark was used by Anton Peschel Dinkelsbühl so the "Bristol" and "Diplomat" marks were made by Anton Peschel Dinkelsbühl. The paper label formats are similar and so are the components and construction. I also found that the German "Windsor" mark was made by Anton Peschel Dinkelsbühl.

The "Windsor" mark in Germany was also made by Anton Peschel Dinkelsbüh. Similar label format and notice the "schw / schwarz / black" in upper right corner which is the same as Diplomat "Bella" (see above).

Excellent find, Steve. I really like the style of this hat. And some great detective work to boot! Another piece of the hat manufacturing puzzle. Both the Windsor and Bristol brands are ones I see on a regular basis when hunting for vintage hats. Good to know they are Peschel made hats.

Borsalino Export Qualität fedora in Mogano colour in a size 59. Nicely done underwelt brim at 5cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. Ribbon in moka and liner states Qualitá Speciale. Sold to me as a size 56, having specifically asked the seller about the size Weighs 119 grams. This one is actually dated (something more common for hats sold in Germany): 20 october 1961. A bit of conformation of what we think we know.

Stefan, Thanks again! Super find with Borsalino Export Qualität in Mogano color. Also great that it has a date stamp. German market Borsalinos are the best documented regarding paper label types. They are very consistent.

Ok I was forced to go to an event in Dallas this weekend. The bright side other than eating too much was that we were close to hallowed ground, the Stetson Outlet in Garland. Fewer dress hats than I have ever seen. Quite a few wool hats and a few fur felt in my size. I walked out with only one. An ultralight strat.

Then I get home to find a custom hat waiting for me from the Great White North.

The Wolfbrae has arrived!

I got my Stetson Temple "50 Grams" hat clone modification back yesterday from JJ Hat Center. Basically, I asked JJ Hat Center to modify a Stetson Temple Navy to look like the Borsalino 50 Grams hat through a hat band change and a crown reshape to a teardrop. Basically, this is what I was looking for:

Curiously enough, I got the hat back with the hatband changed, but not with the crown reshape. Therefore, I reshaped the crown myself. This is my first attempt on making a teardrop crown:

The crown reshape was free anyway, so nothing lost. Still, I didn't get any feedback from them about why they didn't reshape the crown.
