The Bowler or Derby Hat

Sucharipa Wien "Original Öster. Zeugnis / Original Austrian Manufacture", 58 cm, Wool, 175 grams, possibly early 1930s. There is no paper label behind the Sweatband and I couldn't find any production information for Siegmund Sucharipa, Hat Manufacturer, VI District, Bürgerspitalgasse 30, Wien. Siegmund Sucharipa is listed at the same address in the Austrian Hat Industry Guide of 1926. The black Wool Felt has a fine finish. The black Band is of medium width with frayed Bow. The Sweatband and Liner are both Off White. There is also a braided Cord. The overall condition is excellent.

All the finishings suggest to me that this was a top notch Bowler meant to appeal to a higher class of Bowler wearer.

Great find, Steve.

I got this Dobbs Bowler for a very reasonable price, but it doesn't fit me, incorrect size was advertised. Size is actually a 7 1/4. Any information on this hat? I was going to return it to the seller but if anyone is interested would be willing to pass it on to a member here. It is a little rougher than I thought it was as well, the bound edge ribbon shows wear and there is a small hole in the brim.

Two Scott&Co hats came in this week. Rather special given the colour of these bowlers. So Here is the first one: Scott&Co bowler in grey. Size 7 1/4, with the brim a tad under 5,5cm and the crown about 12,5cm (to my eye at least). Weighs 196 grams. I think this is the later one. It is not true to size and feels definitely smaller. Likely a woolfelt or a mixed felt as it has some texture to the hand.

And the brown one. Scott&Co bowler in light brown. Also a size 7 1/4 with the brim at 5cm and the crown slightly higher it seems than the grey one at 13cm. Weighs 160 grams and this has a smoother hand than the grey one.

And this is what the shop looked like, which is all I could find about the retailer.

I am not a fan of Bowlers but I would buy this one just to gaze at the liner.

After @steur commented on the new hats thread about not having seen a vintage bowler in blue, I thought it would be worth posting this one. It’s not my hat. I’ve had it on my watch list on a local market for some time out of curiosity, but it’s much too small for me.
Etsuko says that judging from the writing, it’s likely just pre-war, an assessment that Stefan agreed with.
It’s still available, and pretty cheap. If anyone is interested, send me a PM.
