Amazing that I just searched out this thread (how did I not see it before) to find you post your most recent addition just two minutes prior :D

beautiful Whippet, Brent. I need to add my two here…. Though I don’t think I can compete with your scenery.

My latest Whippet has me needing to make a decision: sell it as is or drop more money into it to clean it up. The felt is very nice and very limp. The ribbon is stained and the sweatband needs to be re-sewn (the leather seems to be okay, but the reed has come apart at the ferrule and there is some verdigris, but the felt doesn’t seem to be stained. It could really use a naphtha bath.

5 5/8” open crown and 2 3/4” wide brim.

Tough call. If I was going to keep it I'd go for a refurb. If I bought it I'd send it out for refurb.

I’ve been wanting to try Garrahan Hat Co. and the complete refurbishment will set me back $140 plus shipping. If it was a bigger size I’d definitely do it as I’d be confident I would make my money back, but a 7 1/8 LO is borderline. I’ll probably list it as it is on eBay and if it doesn’t sell I’ll send it out for the refurbishment.

At least it already is a LO. The risk moing it up in size that much with the bound edge is getting it blocked exactly so the brim width ends up the same all round the 360 degrees. It is tough to do especially if you don't have a block with a pretty close profile to the original blocking. Tougher if you go from Reg Oval to LO. Otherwise you end up with an unintentional dimensional brim.

If I have it refurbished it will be with the goal of restoring it to its original condition. I wouldn’t consider sizing it up.

Ideally the blocks would match, but I’d also be fine if the block was a bit fuller. In the end, no hatter has all the block profiles, heights, sizes, and ovals.
And that is where it gets tricky. Even a slightly different profile takes up the felt differently and it can result in an uneven brim width.....especially a difference from the front/back versus side to side.

I’m not sure if I’d call this light gray or ice blue or ??? I love the color and it really does look more gray in direct light and more light blue in the shade. 5 1/2” open crown and 2 1/2” wide brim. I’m guessing mid 1950s.

UPDATE:
And in case you, like me, thought the Whippet market had cooled, I had an offer within one hour and someone paid the full buy it now price within four hours.
