When I get mine I will let the rain go at it. In my experience not all veg tan leather are not water friendly. It really depends on whether the hide has been stretched or not at the tannery. I don't know why some tannery stretch some hides during the drying process and some don't. The veg tanning pits are basically muddy water, with some added heat. If the leather can survive that it will survive our daily use. This is what I am gonna go with until I get a shrinking one then I will be kicking and screaming about it.

He’s specifically asking about veg tanned which does not shed rain as well as chrome tanned. Also, the military goat leather jackets are all chrome tanned.

I prefer chrome tanned jackets myself. And you're right that chrome tanning is the default for clothing, has been for over a century, including the vast majority of flight jackets (certainly all of the horse and steer ones). However, the WWII M-422a seems to have been made of veg tanned goat from India.

Aero's current goatskin is described as being very water and abrasion resistant, and it's veg-tanned– semi-aniline, at that! I wouldn't expect semi-aniline horsehide to be as water resistant. I think it's the nature of goat hides.

Probably out of topic..so, sorry in advance...but since this discussion is on goat skin and TFL community is also involved in 1920s /30s, as you might know goat skin (so called "pergamena") has often been used to produce beautiful and very expensive Art Deco furniture (and still used to restore them). In that case however, better to avoid weather exposure....

The Wilderness arrived @Canuck Panda.

Absolutely beautiful work by Moira. The goat hide is soft and extremely pliable yet it feels substantial.

I know there was skepticism about the pattern when it was first announced, but I can say from wearing it that it’s very easy to move around in.

EDIT: Forgot to embed it.

Aero also has done this one for someone. I believe this is a modified Wayfarer:

I like both. Just can't make up my mind. It's on the list for sure.

Seems similar except this has split panels for the zipper area and lacks the flap pockets and mouton collar. So the big difference is the collar I think.

Maybe you can split the difference by getting this then having Thurston or Johnson or somewhere make you a detachable shearling collar.

Love this. Totally got my eye on one of these as soon as I can justify it. I know not everyone fancied it, but I've wanted one from the off.

Would you mind taking some pics of it outside? I'm interested to see the color in natural light/sunshine.

Anyone happen to have pics of a seal goat Highwayman or Sheene?

I think there are varieties of seal goat at Aero because I have seen a lot of deep dark brown looking seal goat but mine seems to just be a black jacket., which is somewhat disappointing. It does wear extremely well and I’ve been treating it as a grab and go jacket all week.

At first I thought that you had snagged that black goatskin Wilderness that was on Aero’s sale page. When you said yours was seal, I figured it must have just looked darker in the indoor light. I’m thinking I’ll request lighter/browner hides if I go the custom route. Glad to hear it’s a comfy jacket! I’m looking for comfortable toughness. =)

It looked black and was on the sale page, but it's a "Wilderness, Seal Goatskin, 40" "

It's the exact jacket you see in the product pictures here (that's what it was originally made for).

This particular picture (of my jacket, but taken by Aero) shows the hide well:
