Meant to post this a few months ago when I bought it (off a Facebook group) but ended up traveling with work. Just got back.
I believe it may be either an early CAL or Starglove. It's had a new main zip and full lining replacement at some point. VERY solid jacket still and very wearable. One questionable area of sunburn on the back shoulder.
The pocket placement is indeed unusual, but surprisingly useful. It's kinda like having D pockets on either side and it's pretty easy to access the pockets compared to hand warmers. I can see how it's convenient when on a bike.
It came with the original mouton that is a great color but bald in a few places.
Loving this as a daily jacket.

What is the significance of the stitching? (forgive my innocence)

What a jacket... Like a high-end Star glove? Let's see if it has any hints of Trojan? Can you share some images of the inner hem? Old Star glove and Early Cal's did an angle hem join to facilitate mobility. Lastly, The lining looks interesting. The batch patch looks like my early Californians. By the way, the jacket looks great on you.

Not too long ago, I believe, There were some images of the same design jacket in this forum. I think it was a Cal or Californian? Truly I do not remember, but there is an original of a man wearing one.

It’s not my jacket, it’s a guy I follow on Instagram from Japan.

Cal makes a really fine jacket. I've owned several over the years from various points in history. Here's a later model I had. Really exceptional jacket.

Both the jackets I sold went to Europe and both fetched around $500. Fully rigged and pretty much mint. Wish I had more pics of them!
Would you say this one was a "lightweight" and "drape-y" Cal (like 70s version) or heavyweight, ******proof type Cals that appear more often on the market?

I saw this Cal leather’s posting locally, what is the function of the fur in the lower back? Is it to keep this guy’s bum warm while riding? This posting comes with no detachable mouton fur collar; it appears that he moved it to the lower back by attaching metal snaps there.

Never seen that before. I think your idea for purpose may be close.

Great thread! It's been a long time since I had this much fun researching a new purchase.

I've never been particularly attracted to Cals, but some recent photos by Loungers have turned my head.

A few weeks back I turned 50 and decided to treat myself to a new-to-me piece of high end (ish) leather. I had my heart set on a Vanson but the ones that really excited me were out of my price range. Then I saw these recent Cals posted on TFL and thought, what's eBay look like for Cals right now?

And there was this guy, just sitting there waiting on me at half price. It was love at first sight.

I reckon this is from the early 1980s, maybe steerhide, but I'm not sure how accurate all the dating information is that I've found so I don't know for sure. Maybe someone else can date it.

The graining and the interior are so lovely - really immaculate with terrific character. I just bought it this morning and it has to come all the way across country, so it will be a hard wait. But I love it when a major purchase just feels right.
