Yesterday June 23 (today on the Jewish lunar calendar, 28 Sivan), was the 74th anniversary of the date Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the eventual Lubavitcher Rebbe, and his wife escaped Vichy France, having lived in Paris, and arrived in the US. I am fairly certain the hat is a Borsalino (I believe, starling the fascination of Orthodox Jews with the brand), but noticeably not in black.

Tom Threeperson, lawman and sometimes referred to as the last great ***fighter. Developer of the forward cant holster that was widely adopted by law enforcement and even the FBI later used it calling it the "FBI cant". El Paso Saddlery still produces a line of Tom Threeperson's holsters.

I discussed this theory with @besdor (Steven Goldstein) of Bencraft Hatters last week at his store. His father was the hatter who sold Rabbi Schneerson his Borsalinos in the US and he agreed that the idea for Jews to choose that brand probably did originate with him.

Lester “Benny” Binion (1904 - 1989)

Gambler & casino owner. Ted & Jack Binion were among his offspring. His FBI file reveals a criminal history dating back to 1924, listing offenses such as theft, carrying concealed weapons, two moonshiner convictions, Tax Evasion, & two murder convictions. In 1970 Binion bought the rights to the World Series of Poker. He brought the annual National Rodeo Finals to Las Vegas & in 1988 he was inducted into the Pro Rodeo HOF. Despite having no formal education he was worth $75M when he died. Poker great "Amarillo Slim" Preston thought Binion’s epitaph should be, “He was either the gentlest bad guy or the baddest good guy you'd ever seen."

Great one, HJ. I've always enjoyed the stories surrounding Binion. He was a huge fan of cowboy boots and his pairs numbered in the 100's. He's historic in the boot collector world as being responsible for helping Willie Lusk to open shop. Lusk is credited with being the first black owned custom cowboy boot shop. I've posted the link to the story this quote came from along with a couple of others in the Cowboy Boot thread.

"Among the notable customers of Brown’s Boot was Benny Binion. The master’s thesis said Binion was notable for all the wrong reasons and had been pushed out of Dallas.

In 1946, Binion – a gambler who was in the process of developing a casino in Las Vegas during the same era as gangster Bugsy Seigel – asked Lusk why he didn’t have his own shop. When Lusk said it would take $2,500, Binion handed him cash right on the spot.

Lusk’s Boot Shop was born."

These boots were made for world history, and they came from Lubbock, Texas - Lubbock Lights

Original placard of Gentleman Jack McKenna of the Henry McKenna Sour Mash Whiskey Co, originally an Irish Whiskey distillery. Contrary to popular belief McKenna Whiskey was not the source for the Jack Daniel Gentleman Jack Tennessee Whiskey line. McKenna Whiskey remains today among the product lines of Heaven Hill Distillery, Bardstown, KY.

Almost looks like a painting.

In the days gone by of photography, it was common for a photog to touch up pictures,,, softening edges, adding color etc ( best example is how a large percentage of civil war portraits show rosy red cheeks on the soldiers) . A painting like effect was common. Guess that was the difference between an artist and a technical photgrapher?
